AArrggh, I’m Sick Of These Bright Brass Fixtures…

It happens this suddenly around my house – the light bulbs in the stairway fixture burned out, one by one.  I get tired of the light out so I ask Mark to drag in the ladder.  In that instant I decide it needs more than new light bulbs…. I’m sick of its look.

Start with a clean and dry surface.  I used  Caromal Colours Smooth Chocolate Basecoat and covered the brass.  This product is a great choice because it bonds to almost any surface.

dsc_5280When dry, I took Modern Masters Statuary Bronze Metallic Paint, thinned it a little, then dry brushed the fixture.

Voila… Rubbed Bronze.

I can live with this a few more years now….

  1. Wow…it looks so much better. I just love an easy fix. I have been painting light fixtures around our house, as I have that brass also.

    Good Job!

    Looks terrific!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Patty,
You are the bomb…I would’ve made a mountain out of a molehill like that and you have it done in the time I would be “thinking” about it.
    Looks great!!!

  5. I love statuary bronze and this was a cool post. Looks awesome!

  6. I love how you shoot from the hip! Looks great!

  7. Could I do this same procedure with a coffee table? Would the finish last? Also have end tables and sofa table to do if it will hold up to use.

    • Heck ya it will hold up – check my ‘makeover’ posts on metallic furniture I’ve done – those metallic finishes are no different, really, than this fixture I revamped. Use the Reclaim Mocha as a basecoat – it bonds to metal (clean your tables good first) , if you start with that you will have a finish that holds up. let it dry good then dry brush on the metalliic of your choice (I sell all of those as well). let it dry good, then brush on the toner and wipe it off. it will POP your whole finish.

lastly, topcoat to seal and for washabilty – i love the min wax wipe on poly- its quick, easy, and durable. for all your tables, you should be able to do them all with one quart of Mocha, some metallic (I’d say 8 ounces) a 16 ounce toner, and a can of min wax.

      hope this helps!
