CeCe Caldwell Omaha Ochre With Tea Glaze…

Sampled some CeCe Omaha Ochre

on an oak cabinet panel.   First coat brushed, and already drying

Second coat

letting it dry

covered really nice

I gave it a light sand, and wiped a couple edges with a damp rag (to reveal the original finish),  and ready to glaze

I used Caromal Tea Stain Glaze,  brushed on and wiped off.  Next day I brushed on a coat of CeCe Satin Finish – their topcoat for extra durability

If you prefer a wipe-on topcoat,   Textureline offers several durable topcoat options that are wiped on using a damp cellulose sponge.  I used their Satin Wax (they offer a Flat Wax too) on my old kitchen island and it was simple to apply and long lasting

I carry Textureline products in the store and will be adding some of their topcoats, metallic waxes, pigments and glazes to my online store in the next week.

Leigh Updates Her Oak Kitchen Cabinets With Caromal Paints…

We love seeing painted kitchen cabinet makeovers, by homeowners themselves, don’t we?

Hi Patty,

Thank you for your help in choosing the paint for my kitchen project.  I love the way it all turned out!  I thought you might like to see the before and after pictures!    Thank you!!   Leigh  Farmington Hills

Befores…

Probably what I see the most – honey oak…

In lovely condition, and very functional…  maybe lacking a certain freshness

like this

Did you realize that was the same kitchen?  Go back and look…

Amazing what a little paint, and DIY power can do

LOVE everything about this one!   Leigh chose Textured Basecoat Chocolate for the lower cabinets in the main area, and the uppers are Reclaim Off White with a little Reclaim Pebble to grey them down a bit

Notice she added beadboard to her island

Closeup of the lowers

I did the same thing at my last house – tied my whole kitchen together using the same hardware, even though I’d painted my island different than the rest of the kitchen…

Well thought detailing – ‘feet’ added to give the appearance of furniture -  again, love the beadboard

One last time     BEFORE

and AFTER

Whoooo hooooooo!!!    This kitchen ROCKS!

Leigh, thank you so much for sharing your amazing transformation -  if you stop by to admire your work,  might you share with us how much product your kitchen required?   I’m sure it’s a question everyone asks…

As I tell so many that visit me here and in my store, refinishing your cabinets IS doable – and the most affordable way you’ll find to update your space.

What Specialty Paints Would You Recommend For Our Cabinets?

I got this question awhile back  from a reader-

I need some advice on what to do with our cabinets… we are looking to antique it a bit …

I do have a question about the application. Everything I read on here notes brush and roller application. Is it possible to spray through an hvlp gun or a cup gun? I’m just worried it won’t look like it was done professionally if I brush it.  What color and system of yours would you recommend?

  • RECLAIM

If someone is looking for a more  all-over even looking finish, and doesn’t want to put a lot of effort into creating it, then I recommend the Reclaim line.    The Reclaim wont level out from brushing, that’s why the recommended application is rolling – not with foam but a whizz roller.   There is a slight stipple but from a foot away it looks pretty darn nice for a DIY application.  It is the quickest – rolls out in 2-3 coats – and has a built in sealer so if you aren’t going to have heavy use/scrubbing  then the paint finish when dry is good to go.   I find that most customers interested in using the Reclaim are still choosing to add an additional topcoat over the paint finish, for extra protection.    This paint will cure to a hard finish within 30 days.

How to describe?   resembles rolled on satin latex paint. Clean.

Reclaim on left, Texture Basecoat on right

  • TEXTURED BASECOATS (Country Living Line)

The textured basecoats can be brushed out smoother, or stippled on for a more textural finish. Brushed on can result in a smoother ‘clean’ enough for my eyes,  BUT it does require some effort.  The paint is thicker by nature, so it will leave brush marks.   With sanding effort AFTER the paint is dry it can be taken down to a smoother finish.  On the plus, it is very durable once dry, almost like an INSTANT cure.  On the downside, it’s quite matte when it dries, and requires a topcoat for washability.  No biggy, most folks WANT to topcoat to add a sheen.

How to describe?  A painted finish… rustic…. custom…  if applied thicker,  looks primitive,  country…

Texture Basecoat

  • CE CE CALDWELL CHALK CLAY PAINTS

The CeCe paint flows off the paint brush, almost leveling itself out as you go.  It offers the best coverage of all three paints.  1-2 coats will cover your surface and it’s final finish will be more even than the Textured Basecoat.  If you lightly sand it when its dry (it doesn’t take much)  you can create an even smoother looking finish.    This finish MUST be sealed – you can brush on the CeCe Clear Wax for furniture finishes, and for more durability (like kitchens and tabletops) CeCe offers a brush/roll on Satin Finish.   I also like Textureline’s Flat Wax and Satin Wax combo, applied with a damp cellulose sponge it’s easy to apply, and will cure rock hard.    Approximate cure 30 days.

How to describe?  Creamy,  smoothest brushed on finish, Custom.

CeCe Caldwell

Any of the above specialty paints are great choices for EASY painting -  no sanding, stripping or priming necessary – just make sure you start with a clean, dry, wax free surface.

A Workshop Week… Textureline Finishes ROCK!

Last week I visited the Plaster Center & Minneapolis Institute of Fine Finishes and instructed a 2 day workshop on Easy Cabinet and Furniture Finishes

I loved his studio!  An old building, up a couple floors, in the city of Minneapolis… old plank floors, windows with natural light, high exposed ceilings, tons of room…. an artist’s dream….

It was a fun two days

with cool finishes created

Like those stencils?  I’m finally carrying stencils now, designed right here in Metro Detroit!

Drew Beninati, artist and owner, is the guy that is the colorant genius for Textureline products.   Textureline makes everything  from glazes and pigments to plasters and stone finishes.    Did you know I carry Textureline products as well?   :)

At the end of our class we played around a bit with some new Moire Metallic Plaster colors.  I created this

That was last week.

This past week Drew flew here, to teach a two day workshop on troweled plaster finishes at my studio.  I  buzzed around all week getting everything in order. The back drop is troweled grey Sedonna plaster

Textureline sample finishes decorate the wall

I dressed  up this wall with two finishes

a sweet metallic textured finish on top, and a troweled Moire plaster on the bottom -  both finishes will be taught in an upcoming 3 hour workshop

I got to meet John and Greg from ProFaux out of Akron, Ohio.   I learned so much from John,  and Greg blew me away with his creativity

It was a pleasure hosting Drew -  he’s one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met, and offers a finish-packed  2 day workshop

I’ve got some great stuff in the works -   next week I’ll be adding some new products for purchase, both online and in store.  Look for powder pigments and metallic waxes  in 4 ounce samplers AND as a sample kit.  Additionally, I’ll be stocking several more topcoats that will be useful with cabinet and furniture finishes- a flat wax and satin wax, both applied with a damp sponge – as easy as a wipe-on poly, but more durable.

Look for our summer workshop schedule this week – adding some new sessions,  CeCe Chalk Paint Techniques,  Animal Hide Texture Top Finish,  and a  Simple Wall Finishes Workshop.
