My Oak Dining Room Set Needs Caromal Black – But Which Line of Paint?

Our Thomasville dining room set  was one of the first early investments in our marriage.   A hutch , oval table and 6 chairs was purchased  for use in our kitchen, as our old home had a large nook area .  When we moved to our present home it took its place in the dining room.

Here it is this past December – bittersweet looking back at these photos – who’d have known that less than two weeks later my husband would be coming home from work, no longer employed -  after 32 long years?

The set needs to be updated-  I hate the honey oak, and want to paint it black, lightly distressing the edges.  My quandary is this – as much as I love painting,  I hate painting!   I don’t look forward to painting 6 chairs, a table with 2 leaves, and a china cabinet with a bunch of glass panels to tape off.

The Caromal Colours  Reclaim Licorice (black) is so tempting – quick, easy, and covers like tar …. I tried it on a chair ….

(Like those piles of Legos on the table?   Need to get those listed on eBay…. )

I love the Reclaim….

But,   I LOVE LOVE LOVE the  Caromal Colours Texture Basecoat finishes too.   Here the Peppercorn (black)-

Even though the Texture Basecoat will take a little more effort than the easier Reclaim,  I’m not going to compromise – I love the TB paints for furniture finishes.  The paints make it easy to create a soft, kicked back, custom looking finish with substance.  My dining room set has oak grain – and the sampling of Reclaim Licorice  did not cover the  existing grain pattern whereas the TB paint will hide the grain – in my case I’d prefer the grain be gone.

So -  wish me well – no clue when I’ll find the time, but you’ll be the first to see the updates!

Mariann Achieves A Whole New Look Repainting Her Furniture…

Hi Patty,

First off, I want to say thanks for all of your help and inspiration. If it wasn’t for your website, I am not sure I would have had the nerve to tackle a furniture redo as large as my dining room set. I am pretty crafty, but I have never refinished anything before. I am SO glad I found your sight. All of your helpful hints and photos made me feel empowered!

I am enclosing a before and after photo of my dining set. I refinished the tired pine set with Caromal Colours Peppercorn. I added a little distressing, new hardware and reupholstered the seats for a whole new look!

…  I was so happy with the way it turned out I refinished an old hope chest with Parchment

and a built in desk in my craft room with Reclaim Off White.  My husband says I’ve become obsessed (and I think he’s right)!!

Thanks again for all of your help with using these paints. They really are as easy to use as you say they are.  Best of luck with your new store. Wish I lived closer  ;o)

Wow, I’m so glad I was able to encourage you to go for it – you created beautiful pieces!   Your dining room  is so typical of what I’m seeing from other  ‘want-to-update-my-furniture’ inquirers  -  nice quality furniture with great lines and functionality, but with a finish that lends itself to a certain look/style,  or a finish that doesn’t work with a newly decorated room.  You completely transformed it.

What a lovely hope chest  – great legs .   Is that a stencil or part of the chest?   Your craft room desk is scrumptuous!  I  LOVE the black chair you paired with it,  and the pretty stencil design- I have that same one (used it to create stripes) in my dining room.

So let me ask ,and I hope you come back and comment, -  having used both lines of Caromal Colours – the textured basecoat paint (peppercorn, parchment) and the Reclaim paint (offwhite) -  can you describe, in your words,  the difference between the two finishes?  Do you have a favorite?

RECLAIM Paint Color Swatches, As Promised…

The left strip of each sample is the actual color, dry.  The rest of the wood sampling is glazed with Reclaim Antiquing Glaze.

If you still wish you could prop this sample up in your kitchen or bath, you can order samples of this size, for $3 each plus postage – head here for more info

You can also use the Caromal Colours  Tea or Coffee Glazes or even the Toner over the Reclaim paint if the Reclaim Antiquing Glaze doesn’t do it for you.  Here I rolled on one coat of Reclaim Latte, then when it dried I lightly brushed on a second coat -

Over oak, obviously.   Then I brushed on some Caromal Colours Coffee Glaze – it is browner (cooler tone) than the Reclaim Antiquing Glaze-

then wiped it off with a dry rag

Totally easy.  Totally durable.  What more could you ask for?
