Will Caromal Colours Basecoat Stick To A Faucet?

button for blog

Leslie asks,

“Will the basecoat stick to a bathroom faucet?  I have a guest bath faucet that is bright gold and I hate it!  Would gilding work on it?”

Technically,  Caromal Colours basecoat will stick to metal very very well.   However,  a faucet presents a different challenge – one of constant change in temperature and moisture.  These elements may wear on the material over time.   I have gilded over metal fixtures as well.  But again, not over a faucet.   I’d say, if you really can’t stand it,  and plan on changing it out down the road anyhow, then why not give it a shot?

I have used it on light fixtures, and on several brass door handles, and thus far it is holding up very well.  I was leary about using on the handles, because of the heavy use they receive from the kids – wet hands, grimy hands, body oils etc….  but the handles were starting to wear out so I chose to give them a facelift for cheap and see how much more life I get out of them –

In case you are wondering, the finish above , quite similiar to an oil rubbed bronze, is created this way:

Make sure surface is clean.  Dry.   Brush on one layer Caromal Colours SMOOTH Basecoat color Chocolate-

Use chip brush,  dip into a dark bronze metallic paint.  Offload onto a paper towel or plate so you barely have any on your brush, then bounce it on the fixture, all around, to cover your dark base.     Topcoat your fixture, when dry, with a clear, satin polyurathane.

I have gilded hardware and even a door handle (so it would match) using the Caromal Colour Gilding Kit Silver Metal Leaf –

  1. very nice collection of products…

  2. Great to see you have a finish to do the ORB look. I used the pray paint, but I think your method would hold up much better for long term. Thanks for the tip:)

  4. Do you think I could paint my brass doorknobs with Licorice Reclaim paint? How have your doorknobs held out with the textured paint

    • the textured paint is like CEMENT colette – it doesnt budge off anything. the reclaim is durable to, but i’d do like i did w/the TB and topcoat it with a couple swipes of poly – even though the reclaim has a sealer built in, i’d do more.
