Solid, lovely bones
getting its first coat of Caromal Colours Textured Basecoat Peppercorn –
Going right over this hardware – Caromal paints bond to metal, and make a perfect seal coat under gilding (metal leaf)
One coat TB Peppercorn brushed on –
The black covers so nicely I’ve gotten away, before, with using only one coat -on this piece I chose to do two coats of paint – the second coat doesnt use as much paint, and the application is quicker –
Applying the Caromal Sticky Size to the hardware – the size is what holds the metal leaf to the surface…
it goes on this bright color, and takes about 10 minutes to set up, turning clear
when the size is to tack, the leaf is applied – I used gold leaf
Caromal offers several Gilding Kits – Large, Small and Sampler which include everything you need for the gilding process – basecoat, size, leaf and toner
With the hardware leafed, it was time to light sand the rest of the piece – I use 180-220 grit sand paper and lightly glide over the surface -I prefer the TB sanded as it gives a softer feel to the finish – you don’t have to sand
sanding also helps remove any spots you dont like – say, if you spot a dried ‘blob’ that you didnt notice while painting – simply sand it off! If I want to distress my edges I’ll use a rougher grit like 80-120.
This piece is 1/2 sanded – you can see how the color powders out – not to worry, the Toner or a topcoat will bring it back to life –
Now I brush the Caromal Toner on – over everything, including the hardware –
brush on and wipe off –
Section 1 is toned and wiped, section 2 is toned, and section 3 is sanded –
and here is the finished product –
