Final Hours Of 2012 – What A Crazy Ride!

I’m BACK!!!!!  Well, at least for this evening 🙂    And what a better evening –  my kids are old enough to want to spend New Years Eve with their friends, my hubster is happy sitting home watching the ball drop, as long as he has his shrimp, sausage, cheese and Asti – and I am in heaven because I am sitting by a fire with laptop and cocktail!  I know, that sounds so lame – but I have really missed having the time to post about fun painty stuff – so here goes it!

Before I share a couple EYE CANDY posts of some lovely CeCe Caldwell combo samples we’ve recently created (one by one close up)

I  want to back up….   because, after all, it IS New Year’s Eve.

We started this year with alot of ‘NEW’  –  my hub started a new job, after 30+ years with a previous employer,   I rolled into 2012 with the store taking root…  our family life as we knew it was uprooted, but we survived.   We never know WHY things happen to us, right?

But if you are a believer, then you’ll relate –  God has a plan.   I’m learning to approach life differently.   Where I’m at ?  I need to LIVE it…. APPRECIATE it… find GOOD in it….  it might not be perfect, it might not be MY plan, but it’s not up to us.

You know how I got through this year?  F A I T H.     2012 was a blast –  our little unknown store thrived,  word of mouth spread,  and because of that we are now in a 5 week count-down before we move down the street to a grand new location!  How fabulously amazing is that,  after one year ??!!!

So, as this year comes to an end, I look ever forward to 2013 – we have so much to do!

Here are a few things on our horizon for this next year:

  • a new location – 3000 sf of painting fun!  Come check us out, February 1st,    51350 Van Dyke Rd,  Shelby Twp, Mi 48316
  • a front showroom of hand painted furniture and accessories, not just from me but from FIVE other artisans-  how’s THAT for variety?
  • a monthly give back – we will be hosting monthly events to help those that need it –  because I believe that is what we are called to do – not just reap the reward, but to share it with others

And on a personal note,  we have something new on the horizon – this week we break ground on our new homestead 🙂  How’s that for crazy timing, right?   The good thing is,  it won’t be ready for awhile, good thing because that’s the LAST thing on my mind!      Next 30 days are count-down to new location – we’ve got alot to do.

Today we got a little bit done –  working on the paint display cabinets

Caromal Colours Artisan Collection and Reclaim on the left, and CeCe Caldwell Chalk and Clay paints on the right – these cabinet units will have top shelving units built on top of them housing the sampler jars of paints,  and the counters will be given an Aurastone finish,  maybe like this… something bronze-brown…

Cece Michigan Pine over Vintage White with Dark Aging Creme,  Vintage White over Vermont Slate,  Cinco Bayou Moss over Vintage White with Dark Aging Creme…

Springhill Green over Vintage White with Dark Aging Creme,  Vermont Slate over Springhill Green,  Pittsburgh Gray over Vintage White…

and on the Caromal side…

Candy Apple over Parchment with Toner,  Putty over Peppercorn with Toner, Chocolate over Parchment with Toner,  Colonial Blue over Parchment, Parchment over Peppercorn,  Cobblestone over Peppercorn with Toner….

Every drawer finish will be labeled, in fact EVERYTHING in the store will be labeled,  so you customers can identify what paints are used to create what…

What else did we work on today?   The front check out, which got it’s first basecoat of Caromal Chocolate textured basecoat a couple days ago….

Got it’s second coat today –   this was a 1-layer wash of Destin Gulf Green, Michigan Pine, and Smoky Mountain Gray, over Caromal Colours Chocolate Textured Basecoat…

I’m already loving the desk that Marty dealt me  – and it’s not even done.   I still need to do a wash over it all using a watered down Dover White, then I’ll sand it back some to distress, and seal it with Clear Wax…   The tops will be epoxy’d with Aurastone….  and it needs some new knobs…

Happy New Year to you and your loved ones –  I share this,  from a greeting card, but I liked it!

A new year comes to give us a fresh hope,
For a better future and success
A new year gives us a dream for that
We will face challenges with confidence
On this new year may your dreams and hopes
Succeed with the blessings of God
Happy New Year and Seasons greetings

Merry Day After Christmas…

Why do the days seem to be flying by?

I heard this song Christmas Day –  Babe in the Straw,  by Leigh Nash, and wanted to share it with you.   It doesn’t matter that it’s the day after Christmas –  every day we can be reminded that Christ came into our world to save us all.

We are so blessed.

We need to believe that.   We need to live with joy and peace and love in our hearts…

who is this child,
asleep in a manger?
the heaven’s are bright
the stable’s so cold
on this holy night,
have you come to redeem us?
little child in the straw
little child in the straw

who is this babe?
prince of the universe
a donkey is braying
angels are singing
the prophets did say
you would come to redeem the world
little child in the straw
save us all

and if we lose sight of your sweet face
at the birth of grace, at the birth of grace
light of truth shine like Bethlehem’s star
lead us to where you are, show us who you are

merciful one
lover of every soul
the Father’s own Son
yes, we believe,
you are able to heal us
Noel, noel,
save us all

save us tonight

You Know It’s Sunday, Peace, Hope and Joy…

During this Christmas season,
may we all know the
that come with the celebration of Jesus’ birth!

Our New Store Progress – Want To See?

Have you ever visited us?  This is our store,  since September 2011 –

It all started here…  a hope and many prayers…

2012 was a great year – I met so many wonderful customers, and serviced just as many via phone calls and emails and online shopping -I can’t wait to see what this next year has in store for us!

One change I know of is our new location – Friday, February 1st, 2013 we will be moving our store to a new location – it’s only 1/2 mile down the road, but it is in a dream location in the Shelby Square Shopping Center – 51350 Van Dyke Rd, Shelby Twp, MI 48316  – the northeast corner of 23 Mile and Van Dyke.

I promise, this location will NOT be difficult to find,  and I have  a big Fabulous Finishes sign coming that will be installed right below that triangle peak –

This new studio has over twice the space,  and we are planning to use every inch of it!   The front half of the store will be our showroom,  featuring

  • Fully stocked Caromal Colours Paint (Country Living, Reclaim)
  • Fully stocked CeCe Caldwell Chalk and Clay Paint
  • Brushes, rollers, sandpaper
  • Stencils

  • Custom, hand painted furniture from Fabulous Finishes

  • Custom, hand painted furniture from others

  • Unique one of a kind vintage home decor items

  • Handcrafted french soaps,  soy candles, wood signs…

The back half of the store will be open to our paint and workshop studio –  a great workspace, I can’t wait to host our first workshop…

This  ‘get a new store in order and keep your present one running’ stuff keeps a girl busy.   I’ve had less time to post,  and its taking longer to answer emails and phone calls,  but in my defense, this is what’s been stealing my time-

We painted…

I did a cool metallic crackle finish on what will be our current events board

Hubby and son painted the  work studio floor…. I can’t tell you how geeked I am to drop my first bit of paint on that cement floor 🙂

The year of 2013   carpet OUT    cement IN  !!!!

The front window display cases are decorated,   I’ll have to get some close-ups of the finishes – the first is a gray metallic plaster with glass bead stenciled motif, the middles is a black plaster with gold and bronze waxes, and the last is a broken plaster with earth brown glaze

The display wall, troweled with a dark metallic plaster.  Part of our built in wall units are installed.  The shelving above them still need to be built, and of course I need to give that honey oak an updated finish 🙂

A new service counter…   Again, it needs an updated finish,  and I’m going to epoxy top all three counters with Aurastone –

A stencil over the door entering the work studio…

Then…      (whoot  whoot!)   we cut holes in the wall and installed 6 glass window panels – this way we can see back and forth between the work room and show room, but still have the wall remain

Troweling the opposite wall, bummed that I ran out of plaster…  I’m using Moire Colors by Drew Metallic Plaster and the color is Shale – reminds me of CeCe Caldwell’s Vermont Slate.  It will be a nice backdrop to display painted furniture and accessories, as well as the color decks on the opposite wall.

This area, by the way, will be where you will find pieces for sale by featured artists –

Like this corner display?  We decided to keep it even though it ate a corner – it adds a little character… I left the inner panels the painted wall color, and troweled the shale plaster around it.  A great place to showcase various stencil designs that we stock

Back to the present store –  plan is to use our stenciled glass table in the design area (design books, magazines, wall finish samples, color decks etc).

We got 4 chairs for a steal (before on right, notice the vinyl seat) and painted them CeCe Vintage White

and painted the vinyl seats this way:

1) Caromal Colours textured basecoat peppercorn rolled on with whiz roller

2) Brush with Metallic Bronze Mix (dry brush method)

3) lightly sand to reveal the base

4) Caromal Colours Sticky Size stippled through a stencil – the same stencil that’s on the table (we are coordinating after all!) (the stencil design is Caromal Colours as well)

5) Apply various colors of metallic foil to the pattern (THIS TECHNIQUE WILL BE TAUGHT –    look for our new workshop –  Take It To The Next Level – coming in Spring 2013)

6) Brush on Caromal Toner and wipe off.

Voila.  We kicked the chairs out in no time! Ready to move to the new store

Also busy, behind the scenes, creating these fabulous new 12×12 beadboard tiles – these will be our new movable, touchable color deck sample finishes.

The Caromal Colours textured basecoats – every color has a tile,  every tile shows options –  paint, paint with toner, paint with glaze –

… and the CeCe Caldwell tiles.  I can’t tell you how excited I am to start using these.  So far , every color has been   1/2  sealed with Satin Finish, and 1/2 with Clear Wax.    Each will also get a sampling of glaze and a sampling of Aging Creme (aka Aging Wax)

These are cabinet door samples – done up in CeCe Caldwell colors, all sealed with Satin Finish, and all 1/2 glazed – each had 2 coats of paint, and 2 coats of Satin Finish.

They are AWESOME, can I tell you?  Over oak no less….    each one has been dated so we know how long the finish has been on, and the plan is to scratch test them each week, over the first 30 days, to see how durable they are as they cure….    I think we are going to be seeing alot more CeCe Caldwell CABINET door samples in the future!

Another project new for the store,  we’ll have room now, after all –    CeCe color combo finishes on sample cuttings…

I am visual – need to SEE options, the more the merrier.  We’ve had these wood samplers of Caromal Colours on the wall since day one –   they are great during workshops when everyone is trying to decide  on a finish…

Now our CeCe paints will get its wall of sampler fame!

Here I am working on the first 2 boards – 32 custom sample finishes using Caromal Colours textured basecoat as the first layer and CeCe Caldwell as the top layer-

DSC_9542 [1280x768]

To give even MORE options, many of these finishes will be partially sealed using Clear Wax tinted with powder pigments.  This one is getting Clear Wax with black powder pigment, the other half will be Clear Wax only so you can see the difference.   (look for our IN DEPTH post which will show the photos on every play by play using all 12 pigment colors) –

DSC_9702 [1280x768]

This is that first 32 completed.  The remaining 32 samples will be pure CeCe Caldwells,  meaning  BOTH layers of paint will be CeCe colors,  we’ll just pick color combos that we think you’ll like.

Seriously…. I think I just want to do boards and boards of these,  it’s such a wonderful way to get customers excited about refinishing their pieces!

Another project we’re working on –  I’ve been grabbing old skids from the dumpster next door.  Going to stain them – some will be mounted and used as shelves to prop samples on , this one will be our new stencil, brushes, rollers & tray display.

Material cost –   FREE.     Can you beat that?  And we’re keeping the junk out of the landfills 🙂    Repurpose,  Redesign – that’s what its all about…

Double Thick brushes  (love those for CeCe paints),  regular chippers (perfect for Caromal Colours textured paints and CeCe topcoats), and Round Wax brushes too…

Stencil designs that are impossible to find in your local craft stores, we save you from having to order online

So that’s whats been happening on our end –  my guy will be back after Christmas to get the rest done,  in the mean time,  me and the kids (they are off next week and looking to make some money) can get the showroom display cabinets and trim painted.

Only SIX weeks until we open!
