Maybe I should create a new category – like a Trials and Tribulations of owning a paint store/studio. If I could have a do-over, I’d change how I handled my open cans of paint…
Take a new CeCe Caldwell can
the RIM, so virgin-esque…
How I like it – clean, tidy, kept, S N A P P E D… Right?
Oh my Lord, how did this happen?
Horrible …. stupid, not cleaning the rims after painting.
When we moved to the new studio in February, I gained great storage to organize and stow our open paint …
But as the summer rolled out, the messy cans started to grow.
It’s easy enough to do – you pour some paint, or spoon some out, the rim gets yukky, and – who cares – you just re-lid it. Only, it doesn’t QUITE snap, because the paint is in the way. And then that paint dries, and your rim is cooked.
Now you try to get it to snap, but its too late – all dried and cracked and crumbly. You can’t clean off those crack chunks because they’ll drop in your good paint and make it bumpy paint… and no one wants bumpy paint.
No choice but to use, and REUSE, the paint, crunchy-rim-loose-lid and all, until you reach the point where your paint is affected –
See how thick? Some of the cans, as we cleaned them all up, were completely dried out…
We salvaged what paint we could, making sure every saved can could snap
transferred some paint to a more secure container
and got rid of every can that was nasty
The one good thing that came from all this? A pretty rug –
Before trashing the cans, I took some of each color and rolled it on our concrete floor. Then I added a stencil to pull it all together
How fun is that, right??
I’m not even going to seal it – we’re going to walk on it, and stomp on it, sweep and mop on it, and take deliveries on it (LIKE MUCH NEEDED PAINT ORDERS) just like it is
I know it will be fine – we have these stencils that have been on the workroom floors since spring –
all done with the chalk/clay paints –
None of them sealed…
I know the chalk/clay paints need to be sealed for durablilty, but we’ve mopped over these many a times, and they are still entact!
I think its because they are applied over that porous cement – it just grabs it right up and holds it tight…
Moral of the story? Keep your paint rims CLEAN when you use our paints – keep it like this
or before you know it, it will look like this
Every time I look at my fruit striped rug, I’ll be reminded of that 🙂
