The Pewter-fied Desk Amplified – Drawer and Knob Detail

I posted yesterday about the student desk project

that I completed using APC Smoke Signal, a bunch of stuff on the top, and APC Dark Wax and Clear Wax mixed with APC Pewter Mica Powder

I forgot to snap a peak inside the drawers,  today I remembered-

Not sure why I like to stencil inside drawers, you know it will end up unseen as the drawers fill…

Maybe it’s that desire to add SOMETHING, but not wanting to add too much – if it’s hidden like this, it won’t be a deal breaker 🙂

A closeup of the knob I crafted…

and the flash gilded balls 🙂

Cute little writing pads ….

After I took the drawer pictures,  I walked back into the workroom and noticed the cork board that hangs by our back counter –  it was my daughter’s old beat up bulletin board that I’d painted Reclaim Mocha, and zebra’d in silver blend using a stencil –

I did that combo  once before on  a flip bench back and loved it

I thought it would be cool to add that to the drawer sides…    The drawers were already painted a Mocha Reclaim blend,  so I was 1/2 way there – I added a zebra print using a silver blend metallic to just the outer sides…

I just have to price it,   always the HARDEST part!

Now I can move on to finishing something else that I’ve already started,  like this table that needs some fun –

Something whimsical like this Stripe Console Table, a mere $3700.    It would be interesting to see the transition of pricing for MacKenzie-Childs painted furniture.   Did she start out more reasonable, and then soar?  Or did she start out from the beginning with pricy prices?

or this 12″ x 34″  Dark ‘Tiny” Table,  more affordable at $2350  –

I’m drawn to the randomness of these pieces  – so many textures, patterns, mediums, mixed into one –  look at that drawer pull!  The beaded fringe,  we’ve done that before on table edges…

And look,  crystal knob looking feet.    I’ve done that on a few pieces too –   heck , I need to add a zero on the end of my prices!     Just kidding 🙂

I’d read awhile back that MacKenzie lost everything and it was taken over and continued on – wouldn’t that suck?  You started something, but hit troubled times, and lose it all, only to have someone else carry it on?

I have this pair of chairs to finish too – maybe something primitive for Karen 🙂

or this piece that I plan on doing a dirty grit white –

Maybe I should focus on finishing this table top that’s been kicking my butt??

I have this chair to start,  it could go with the desk I just finished….  hmmm, that’s tempting….

Either way,  I  need to wrap this up and get to work – I still owe about 500 people emails,   (Pat R I’m ON it this morning!) ,  and I pledge to do that not-fun job before I delve into the paints.

  1. Oooo…the second I caught a glimpse of that table my heart fluttered…could it be Mac Kenzie Childs? Yep sure was.
I didnt hear that about her business..how tragic if true.
The last thing I read about her, is that they were living on a boat (that was of course fabulous) near New York Harbor. I’m going to have to do some digging today!

    • I posted awhile back about her pieces- they are so original, I’ve always been intrigued by her work… one of my old clients had a lot of her china pieces, and was the one that told me about the financial woes – I don’t know all the details, heck maybe she made out in the end – let me know what you find!

  2. Your pieces are so much prettier than these M. Childs’ pieces! “Less Is More”!

  3. I found a link about it.
Seems to me that although they could take the property and the name, they cant take her ongoing talent. That belongs and solely resides with her…forever. Lets hope that she comes up like a phoenix in the near future!

Okay..sorry about hijacking your thread..but I thought this was a very interesting subject. Anyone of your students ( not to mention you!) could grow your design work in the future that you can even fathom right now. There are great lessons to be learned, along the way.

I’ve been meaning to ask you about your cat? What happened?
My cat is really sick again, and back on silver water. She almost died last week after not eating for 10 days straight. It is her pancreas. Cant fix it..only palliative care. Hoping the silver water brings her another chance.
They say cats have 9 lives right? That means there are 8 more left!

I’m up in Michigan ( from Florida) one of these days I’m going to drive over to visit your studio!
    Have a good week,
    Debra

  5. no hijacking, I wondered about that – oh, my cat…. sigh – I miss him. His brother is sitting next to me right now, but hes not a match to Bruno, I hate to say…. He pretty much battled, from early on, that urinary thing that male cats are prone to -the crystals forming and blocking , special food, etc etc. had several surgeries over the years, but then the last one was to kindof make him a ‘girl’ and widening his opening. I thought for sure that would be the fix, had I known it wasnt a for-sure thing we might not have agreed to it – but either way, he still got sick again and after a hospital stay to pump him back up it just didn’t do the job. It was a horrible heartbreak to come home to him near the end, we knew what was coming – first time i’ve had to deal with that, and to have it be my favorite – big sad face…. I hope your cat bounces back – i never heard of silver water ?

  6. Hey Patty, I’ve been so busy that I didnt come back to check on this post. So sorry to hear about your cat. Mine hasnt eaten cat food in over two weeks now. She ate chicken a few times ( just about 1 teaspoon) but cant manage to keep it down. So we are on a path, I dont want to go down : (
The silver water is a whole big subject, but it is very helpful to us and our family. I purchased a generator to make it after spending nearly 100.00 per gallon buying it from companies online. I use it as a topical antibiotic, to clean anything ( counters etc) It kills all bacteria, viruses, fungus within 6 minutes. I do drink it, as do my pets. Even cleans stainless steel without streaking. Awesome stuff. If I feel a cold coming on, it knocks it out immediately. Also good for rough heels. Blah blah blah…I love the stuff..lol.

    • wow i never heard of it! hmmm…. i’ve got super rough heels too – my store is right next door to a health food store, i should see if they have it, just out of curiousity! so sorry to hear about your furry pal, thats the worst part of loving an animal….. hang in there!
