This week pretty mercury glass hanging hearts arrived
They are even prettier in person
We painted some stars for the showroom – gift giving season is just around the corner
The first layer was a dark gray custom mix of Caromal textured basecoat peppercorn (black) and wisteria (white), then we used various colors of our chalk/clay paints over top, sanded back, stenciled, and waxed for a nice sheen –
Lastly, we added a little pizazz to each one
I worked on a pair of primitively chippy chairs- here we have CeCe Caldwell Chesapeake Blue and Caromal Colours Colonial Blue as the base –
then we dragged Caromal textured basecoat Chocolate and a dabbling of Peppercorn-
The sloppier the better….
Over that went a layer of Caromal’s Chipping Creme, a medium that needs to be applied between Caromal paints if you layer multiple colors –
Chipping Creme is a product designed to work between separate layers of Textured Basecoat, like peanut butter between two slices of bread. This material creates a poor bonding layer between your Textured Basecoats, allowing you to remove the upper layer of Textured Basecoat in decorative patches, exposing the first or background color layer. The result is a chipped or worn-off “old world” paint finish look. Chipping Creme can be brushed or rolled on your surface.
When the chipping creme dried we painted the chairs Caromal Textured Basecoat Parchment
and when that dried, sanded to reveal everything we’d layered on!
I usually use the mouse sander where I can, then switch to 120-150 grit sand paper for the rest –
I wanted these chairs to look grungy and old, so I got out the Toner-
Brush it on
and wipe it off. That simple. It REALLY likes to age up the light colors (white/offwhite) so I work one part of the chair at a time
See the difference? The left one is toned. Did you notice the difference in the chairs too Pretty cool I thought, same but different… the one on the right reminds me of that face guard that Hannibal Lector wore in the move Silence of the Lambs!
If I didn’t topcoat these chairs this finish would still survive – Caromal’s paints rock this way – they’ve got ingredients in their paints that make it not only stick on the front end (no sanding, no stripping, no priming etc) but ALSO on the finished end…
Good luck wearing THAT finish off!
Thing is, the finish, unsealed, will be very matte – I like it for these chairs and I’m leaving them as is
Caromal’s paints make it beyond easy to create really authentic, dimensional, weathered, primitive, chippy finishes…
And FINALLY wrapped up this Jacobean gathering table
but the top was a real struggle for me. I wanted to keep the wood top, and thought it was in good enough condition to just lightly sand and restain
but it wasnt. I tried SEVERAL times to sand and redo, but each time, even with fiddling and tweeking, I’d still see these three spots that (you can see 2 below) I wasn’t okay with…
I tried a thin base of diluted chalk/clay paints, laying that on and sanding back some – that can create a really pretty underlayer for a faux grain…
I sealed it, then added stains and grains and tints…. (trust me, this was getting OLD!)
and it STILL didn’t hide those troubled spots. The chalk/clay base was too sheer….
So I started AGAIN – this time using Caromal’s textured basecoats thinned down – a mix of black and white – and thinly coated the surface
When it dried I sanded to give it a smooth feel…
Applying it thin enough, and sanding, can result in some nice organic dimension. For this surface, it did the job of ‘masking’ those areas that were visually and texturally different-
Over that I added an overglaze, to even out the overall color –
I’m still not 100% sold – I’d love to just strip it naked again and do the top gray….
Spending too much of this
on this table. I need to leave it alone and move on to the next project
