There she sits, tucked in the back, tagged with customer information, waiting patiently to be chosen next…
She lived with us for awhile – Nancy, her owner, dropped her off BEFORE heading to Florida for the winter months….when Spring hit I knew I needed to get busy –
First coat a blend of American Paint Company’s Cannonball (a black) and Beach Glass (a turquoise) –
When the first coat dried I applied several layers over top of the same color, thinned with water, also incorporating in some warmer tones (a mix of Tumbleweed, Desert Cactus, Heaven’s Light)
I sanded back the finish with 180 grit paper, something I like to do – it refines my paint finish, removing unwanted brush and application marks, and lets me shadow high’s and lows –
A wet rag method can do this as well, but I find I have more control with the paper
Instead of automatically grabbing the wax, I instead used American Paint’s Topcoat Finish to seal in the chalk clay mineral paint – Topcoat Finish is magical for chalk/clay/mineral based paints- it’s water based, all natural, non-yellowing, and is an awesome alternative to sealing up these porous paints –
Simply brush it on, like a milky water, and when it dries you’ve got a paint finish that will be more durable than wax alone. Don’t try to apply Topcoat Finish OVER wax – that doesnt work. When I need
D U R A B I L I TY
like this customers bathroom vanity, or kitchen cabinets, I Topcoat Finish first then wax if I want…
In this case, I Topcoated, let it dry, THEN brushed on American Paint’s Dark Wax. The wax antiqued this paint finish perfectly, and still gave a little wax glow, not like if it would have been ONLY waxed, but hmmmm… what would I prefer – a finish that is HARDER and more durable, or a waxy shiny finish that is harder to maintain?
To finish this pretty piece off, I cleaned up the original hardware , gave it a quick swipe of Caromal’s Reclaim Mocha, then a bronze metallic, then a poly sealer.
Swarovski Crystals completed the hardware, as well as some detailing on the vanity. My client LOVED the piece!
I loved it so much I wanted to do another piece just like it for our showroom floor, so I grabbed this chest
this time taking photos as I went along –
Second coat, again, washing a combo of the first color, and a lighter mix of Tumbleweed, Desert Cactus and Heaven’s Light – applied wet on wet, with water, to thin it out
as it dries I brush/blend more in, until I like my shadowing.
After it dried and after I sanded I sealed it with American Paint’s Dark Wax – here the left side has been applied
Dry and ready to buff. The top of this chest was in really nice condition, so I sanded it back and then applied several coats of stain, first a Minwax Jacobean color, then a Stain and Seal Antique Mahogany, then sealed with a poly
What direction did I want to go? I didn’t want to whoop it up too much, but the piece was large, and I felt like it could use a little dressing up, so I added a stencil on each side, using Caromal Toner, and then added a small one on the front feet –
Drying the top after applying more stain
Re-dark waxed the feet to make them darker –
Dressed up all the hardware, painting them with the same paints, sealing with APC Topcoat, and embellishing with crystals
The finished top, and a good closeup of the stencil
We added it to our showroom last week, it is one heavy chest!
Maybe these guys were working on this piece!
Available for purchase, $1550
