Paint Your Oak Cabinets? These Customers Did! And A MUST SEE Brick Fireplace Too…

My last post I shared a bunch of before and afters, from customer’s paint projects.   If you’ve been considering a project of your own,  this last round could move you to action…

Hi Patty,  After reading your blog post, I realized I didn’t send you my bathroom cabinet pictures. I had the blah honey oak cabinet in there …

IMG_2230

and painted it with the Caromal Colour’s Reclaim Pewter paint, and used Caromal Creme Glaze with the APC Pewter Mica added in. OMG. It’s gorgeous!

IMG_2235

IMG_2239

The pictures don’t really do it justice. There is the neatest sheen to the cabinet and with the counter and the walls, it looks amazing. Love it!

IMG_2242

I seriously can’t thank you enough for your patience and guidance when I come in to your store. I’m so glad I found you.  Enjoy your day!  Michelle

IMG_2256

Love this color!!!!  I did a sample door at the store with this combo, and loved it, and others are loving it too –  I’m  thrilled to see it in action!  Great pic Michelle!

This one will wow you for sure –   I got Sue to share her pictures because we ALL need to see just how much impact a little bit of paint can make….   here’s the before

001

Now,  the after   (are you sitting down ?)

caromal colours textured basecoat paint, patty henning, fabulous finishes

I think this is my favorite transformation to date…  They used Caromal Colours Textured Basecoat paint –  Parchment with Glaze for the mains, and Chocolate for the accent cabinets over the sink – how perfect was that idea?

083

Sue’s husband added moulding to the top of the uppers, raw, and painted it as well, accenting both colors – again, brilliant!

024

Love their choice of counters -they stained those – the hardware is perfect…. the farm sink and custom lower ruffled fabric …

They tiled their own backsplash too.   Is this not like right out of a magazine?

Seriously people,  YOU can do it!

And one more – Kitchen Cabinet Fabulousness:

Patty-  After weeks of having my kitchen in a complete mess I am proud to send you the before and after pictures of a project that I wish I would have completed years ago. I want to personally thank you for doing a little hand-holding during this process also. We are wanting to sell our house and any kind of ‘upgrades’ needed to be inexpensive, thus I needed to work around the green and white subway tile and green, yes green formica countertops. The  suggestions and samples you sent were spot on and I LOVE IT!

yvette kitchen redo (1)  yvette kitchen redo (2)

yvette kitchen redo (3)

I had used Caromal Colours Textured Basecoat before and was familiar with that product but this was my first experience with their Reclaim paint. The Reclaim paint is like a mayonnaise consistency that is easy to apply. The gallon price could be a little intimidating, but it does EXACTLY what you’ve explained it to do in your videos and pictures posted.

yvette kitchen redo (4)

I have a gally kitchen with 35 cabinets including a pantry door and that gallon gave me 2 coats on the inside doors and 3 for the outside with just a smidge left for touchups. PERFECT!

yvette kitchen redo (5)

The glazes used were a clear coat and licorice mixed together from two 16oz containers of each (although I think it’s a bit less than 16). I have virtually none of the glaze mix left.

yvette kitchen redo (6)

Even though the Reclaim line has a built-in sealer, I top-coated with a minwax sealer at least 2x for all those cabinets that would get handled a ton or water potentially on them from the sink. All in all, it’s AMAZING what a little paint and forethought can get you! The only thing I would have done differently was to add beadboard to the ends of exposed cabinets, but what’s the likelihood that both big-box lumber stores saw was broken the day I was needing the boards cut–oh well, it doesn’t look too bad!

yvette kitchen redo (7)

Enjoy the pictures. I can’t tell you how happy I am with the outcome and will continue to be a purchaser of your product lines. I appreciate as a consumer, all the useful information that you provide via your blog and would recommend subscribing. LOVE THOSE PAINTS!    A million thanks!!   Yvette

If Oak Cabinets are not your forte, how about

Good Morning Patty,  First off – Thank you very much for helping pick out the paint colors for this project.  Here are the pics of the fireplace I painted with the American Paint Company’s paint I purchased from your store.   The Before:

fire-1a-before

1st coat – watered down sample size of Lowe’s Valspar ‘Cathedral Stone’ to give the brick a wash of gray color

Additional coats –
American Paint Company – Plymouth Rock, Smoke Signal, Freedom Road
Lowes Valspar samples – 3 different grays – from the Olympic Paint card

fire-1b-after

Each brick was individually painted.  I basically put all six colors on a paper plate, then dipped different parts of the brush into different colors then into water, tapping out the excess and smushed the brush into the brick in a dabbing, random motion.

painting mantel mantle

fire-1d-beforeIf it got too blotchy, I went back over it with water to smear the colors.  I kept building up the coats until I was satisifed with the coverage and pattern.  Mixing the latex paint with the clay paint, I think, really gave it more of a ‘brick’ feel/texture.

fire-2a-before

I have not sealed it yet since I am still deciding what to do with the mortar (some of the paint got on the mortar as you can see in some of the pics.)

The mantel is done in American Paint Co Freedom Road.

Again, thank you for your help and have a great day.  Colleen

Love all of these projects,  thank you for sharing with me so I can share them for everyone else!

Another Round – Customer Before And Afters – Painted Transformations

Always good to inspire others wondering,

“can I really do this myself?”

yes-you-can-lisa-knechtel

Debby transformer her large, bare wood mantle with Caromal Colours paints – she first applied Textured Basecoat Chocolate, then Chipping Creme, then topped it  with Textured Basecoat Cobblestone (a sage color).  She gave it some distressing then antiqued it with Caromal’s Toner glaze –      LOVE-ish!

deb cob over choco toner

Susie started with this giant before –    she wanted

a more simple finish for this piece, maybe just a Reclaim distressed, not sure. I do not want to get in over my head. This is a LARGE built-in and I want the finish to be timeless. Also, I want to lighten it up a bit from the current dark stain finish and accent the carving details. Not overdone.Just a beautiful, elegant piece, not overwhelming in the room…

cabinetbefore

She decided on Caromal Textured Basecoat Parchment,  and a glaze that we custom created for her (from afar I might add –  she lives down south) .   She ordered some wood samples, and asked if we could cook up  a  greyish umber glaze.   She glazed with a mix of Coffee, Creme and Licorice Glaze.

She contacted me after the piece was painted – she was ready to glaze and wanted to make sure it went smooth.  She didn’t want much color just, just ever so slight.   She had planned on using a waterbased poly on the unit, to bump up the sheen, so I suggested to topcoat FIRST, before glazing – that would make the glaze ride on the top more, than soaking into the paint finish.  She also mixed her glaze color with a little bit of clear glaze, to lessen its intensity.

Her final words –

Just to play it safe I applied all of your suggestions. I put on a coat of poly, added clear glaze, wiped with dry rag followed by damp rag. Results are beautiful and exactly what I was trying to achieve.

Gorgeous!  Thats a whole different unit!

the after, with an antiqued metallic silver finish –  she reused her stencil creatively,  applying parts of the whole element here and there –  love it!

Tina started playing with her stash of paints –

… this is the round particle board top table –  I was itching to paint something but really had nothing in mind, so I just started slapping paint on! The really funny thing is this is even the back side with the screw holes but I just couldn’t stop lol.

1 coat RECLAIM PEBBLE , Let dry    Fill in missed spots with RECLAIM PEBBLE, not a full coat just a few missed spots and here and there for texture. All done with old chip brush, just slapping it on.

Used FLEUR stencil with TEXTURED BASECOAT in PUTTY, WISTERIA, and CHOCOLATE.  Let dry overnight.

Started with CAROMAL COFFEE GLAZE but just didn’t feel dark enough , so brushed on some TONER, and wiped back.

Very cool table now, and a perfect example of how you can create the finish you want AS you go along!

Rhonda’s project, how fun is this?

Hi Patty,
I finished redecorating my camper using the Caromal Colours Reclaim Buttercreme and Toner. Out took on a life of its own as out went along. I couldn’t be happier with it. The products rock, people can’t believe that I did it!

Michelles sends these pics of her redo – you can read her FULL how to at her blog,  www.wirewhisksandwoodenspoons.com.       While you’re there you might want to check out some of her recipes –  the most recent Hawaiian Coleslaw just caught my eye 🙂

She says :    “Thank you again for helping me. I’m excited to get the bathroom cabinet done now. I’ll forward pics from that as soon as I’m done.”

Linda used Reclaim Licorice,  the absolute best black around – NO stripping, sanding, priming.    Not only a primer, and finish but also the only paint I know of that has a Sealer built in!   Reclaim Bonds to near every surface – perfect for cabinets, furniture, accessories. When cured, RECLAIM is durable and chip-resistant.

Kim didn’t send a before, but the after is fabulous –  she used our metallic finish on the base of this chest, but left the drawers stained –    love the look!

Ken stopped in one day with this unfinished cabinet in his trunk – we helped set him up with the American Paint Company products  he needed to obtain a look he had in mind.   He send us the after picture:    (Love it!)

I thought I’d pass along a shot of the corner cabinet you helped me with a few months ago.  You were extremely helpful and patient with me since I had no idea what I was doing.  We went with the American Paint  Beach Glass  Chalk Clay Paint with Topcoat Finish.  Turned out awesome.

I’ve got 3 more really great before/after makeovers – they were kind enough to send multiple photos  – and I feel they need to be seperate posts, so that folks searching specifically for ‘painted kitchen cabinets’  or ‘painted fireplace brick’  can find them easily,  so those will follow this one.

Flashback – Where I First Started Creating….

Clearing out my media discs, trying to sort and organize – I came across these photos

DSC_0253

Oh my goodness…

productwall

I am getting antsy looking at these-   SO congested!

DSC_0244

At the same time, I REMEMBER….

DSC_0245

I started my finishing business, Fabulous Finishes,  as a mom of a first and second grader.  My husband was supportive –  he let me,  multiple times,  leave home and skip across states to take week long finishing courses,  where upon I’d return home to my  STUDIO-

DSC_0246

My studio was in our basement – a very cool basement but I’d say 95% finished…..   I had no where to set up except in this corner of our furnace room –

DSC_0247

Can you believe, I had all this crazy stuff within feet of the furnace?   That plywood board, below, was where I’d clamp my sample boards, and devise new finishes for potential clients…

DSC_0248

Often, my daughter would sit on the floor and create art with her paints…

DSC_0249

And now I come to work here…

Crazy.

God is really amazing….

Texture Texture, Texture Smooth, Options For Painting Cabinets and Furniture…

Folders and folders of photo projects to share….   What should I post next?   Caromal Colours Textured Basecoats or Reclaim paints?  American Paint Company’s Chalk Clay Mineral paint projects?   Metallics?

Any time I’m away more than a few days from posting my mind scatters in all directions, wanting to share everything at once.

Instead,  how about I share some combos?

DSC_6054

Caromal Colours Textured Basecoats – Mustard over Peppercorn, with Toner

Caromal Colours Textured Basecoats - Mustard over Peppercorn, with Toner

When color #1 dries you’ll want to brush on a coat of their Chipping Creme –

Chipping Creme is a product designed to work between separate layers of Textured Basecoat, like peanut butter between two slices of bread. This material creates a poor bonding layer between your Textured Basecoats, allowing you to remove the upper layer of Textured Basecoat in decorative patches, exposing the first or background color layer. The result is a chipped or worn-off “old world” paint finish look. Chipping Creme can be brushed or rolled on your surface.

Great for around hinges, door pulls, table legs….

1. Apply textured basecoat thick or thin… allow to dry

2. Apply a healthy coat of Chipping Creme over entire surface… allow to dry

3. Apply textured Basecoat of another color

4. As soon as this is dry, chip away using the side of a key or a small flat scraper if you want a heavier chunky reveal , like this

dsc_4732-desktop-resolutiona

– then,  refine your chipping using 80-120 grit sandpaper to achieve desired effect.

For durability or exterior use, topcoat.

Caromal Colours Textured Basecoats - Mustard over Peppercorn, with Toner, fabulous finishes, shop.fabfinisher.com, detroit, paint workshops, retailer american paint company, chalk, clay, mineral, paint, reclaim

Another Caromal Textured Basecoat , Chipping Creme, Caromal Textured Basecoat –

DSC_3984

This rocker started with a cleaner (no smooshing) brushed on layer of Peppercorn (black)  Textured Basecoat

DSC_3987

then a brushed on layer of Chipping Creme

DSC_3994

then a brushed on layer of Textured Basecoat Paprika (barn red)-

DSC_3996

When it dried, I went to town with my mouse sander, revealing back the black base, even chewing into the original wood finish.  If I wanted heavier chipping/pitting I would first scrape at my finish with something sharper like a flat blade, or screwdriver,  then I’d finish it off by sanding.

I added a stencil with the Peppercorn, creating a raised design, and highlighted it with American Paint Company Waistcoat (pea green)

DSC_3998

To finish it off I waxed it with Liberon Bison Walnut Wax – its an easy wax to use with the Caromal paints – it antiqued that Paprika color nicely, dried fast, and buffed to a nice sheen

DSC_4000

More layering – this time I START with Caromal’s Textured Basecoat but top it with one of my all natural chalk clay paints by American Paint Company-

This was my laundry room project when we moved last year –  I had our contractor turn a closet into a more functional space,  and we added a kitty box hole.   First things first,  had to get rid of that boob light

DSC_4691

and add something more my style – that’s better!

DSC_4783

Then I started on the cabinets and built-in.  I brushed on one coat of Caromal Colours Textured Basecoat Chocolate –

DSC_4799

The counter was plywood and I had plans to finish that too.   I rolled the Caromal Textured Basecoat Chocolate on to build some texture

DSC_4792

then I brushed on some American Paint Surfboard, Liberty and a little Dessert Cactus, and troweled it tight over the Chocolate Texture.  When it dried I sanded it good, then later added an epoxy-

DSC_4811

Painting the basecoat over the brand new cabinets –

DSC_4821

When the Chocolate Textured base dried I brushed on one coat of American Paint’s Navajo White.

I DID NOT BRUSH ON CHIPPING CREME IN BETWEEN.   The chipping creme is used ONLY between Caromal Colours type paints as they have strong bonding power and can bond too much to each other.  The chalk clay paints are easy to reveal back, with sandpaper or a wet rag even,  until you topcoat them.

I tried my hand at backsplash tile too – looks cool but still haven’t grouted it yet, and it’s been 9 months!

DSC_4823

I brushed the Navajo White on thinner,  and only one coat.  I had a little bowl of water handy to dip my brush into every so often – the little bit of water helped me move the paint across the textured brown

DSC_4833

DSC_4834

When the Navajo dried I started to sand the finish,  you can use 100-150 grit – to reveal that Chocolate brown underneath…

DSC_4841

DSC_4849

On the front of the wash tub, I had applied a stencil using a mix of Neutral Texturebase and tinted it with a little bit of APC Surfboard –  the Texturebase is like a thicker plaster and creates awesome raised stencil elements.  The APC Navajo White  went on over that,  and when dry, everything got sanded

DSC_4825

The sanding reveals some of the buried stencil as well.   I added my old knobs, not for function, since its a fake panel,  figured they could hold towels…

DSC_4857

After the sanding, I wiped off the dust with a dry rag, and proceeded to seal everything up using American Paint company Topcoat Finish.  I applied 2 coats.   Here its wet –

DSC_4863

Repurposing (aka  reusing) my old laundry knobs –

DSC_4867

DSC_4870A

DSC_4852A

I needed a cushion for the bench seat, but didn’t want to spend for a custom fit

DSC_4845A

so I found an outdoor lounge chair pad,  stenciled it with a mix of APC Topcaot and APC Surfboard,  and glued on some trim I had –

DSC_4910

Love my counter,  several years ago I went out of state to get trained and certified to install Aurastone/Granicrete – an epoxy countertop finishing system.

I never used it like I thought I would (big ideas to  refinish every client’s formica counters into beautiful works of art) because the process is very time and detail oriented, there is a larger margin for error (like a fly landing in the wet epoxy), and most importantly, the products are NOT cheap.

I love creating with the products, though, and still use them, mostly for furniture tops –

DSC_4923A

It worked perfectly for this project –  DSC_4924

Another Caromal Texture/APC Chalk Clay was this desk –

DSC_1138

One coat brushed on Textured Basecoat Parchment (creme)

DSC_1139

Followed by one coat APC Cannonball (black)

DSC_1140

I forgot I  did anything different on the top, and going through my pictures I saw this picture below and thought   ” ?? What’s that Textured Chocolate and  Textured Parchment and Beautiful Embellishing Creme Brazillian out for?”

DSC_1142

I brushed those on, wet into wet, and  bladed them about, to create an organic feel

DSC_1148

I added some ‘veins’ , using   Krylon’s Webbing – both  gold and white –  veins shot out of a can 🙂   (practice on something first!)

DSC_1149

Since it was a desk/vanity top I wanted to make sure the finish would be durable, so  I sealed the top with APC Topcoat Finish and let it dry.

DSC_1150To seal the rest of the piece I used a mix of APC Dark Wax and APC Clear Wax + APC Black Mica –

DSC_1152Scrubbed it on with a brush

DSC_1154even over the Topcoated top – thats the nice thing about APC’s Topcoat Finish,  it can seal up the chalk clay based paints with ease (like brushing on water) , and when dry will be more durable than wax alone.  You CAN wax over it too, but you CANT do the reverse.  Don’t wax first, THEN try to Topcoat – doesn’t work.

DSC_1158The wax will still add an antiquing to the paint finish, and some of that wax glow,  it just won’t be as intense

DSC_1161

Brushed it on everything, then wiped off with dry cloth

DSC_1164

After it dried I buffed with the drill brush

DSC_1201

Added some new hardware and voila-

DSC_2236

DSC_2244Then I sealed, antiquing the piece at the same time, using American Paint’s Dark Wax –   again, not pushing product – I’ve used many,  but their waxes are simply THE BEST.

DSC_2237

DSC_2238

DSC_2239Wax on, wipe off excess, let dry.

DSC_2243Before I wax the top, I topcoat with APC’s Topcoat Finish – which will add durability –  then I waxed it

DSC_2337

Oops, one more – perfect for last because it is both a Texture OVER a Texture  AND  a smooth over a texture –
