Furniture Paint Finishes – Eye Candy Layering Colors of Paint…

I’ve always been a fan of sample boards, sample finishes… it’s a visual thing. How else, after all, will we figure out just WHAT floats our boat and what sinks it?

We’ve got hundreds of samples in our store,  Caromal Colours, Reclaim Paint, American Paint Company …  There are solid colors,  layered colors,  glazed finishes, waxed finishes, topcoats,  textured, smooth, you name it.

We recently beefed up our American Paint Company samplings,  adding 150+ layered sample finishes, with various topcoats –

If you’ve not tried American Paint chalk/clay/mineral paints and topcoats,  I highly recommend them.   There is so much hoopla surrounding the ‘CHALK PAINT’ craze –   they AREN’T all created equal.

APC’s paints are more than just chalk, they are completely natural, and smell great 🙂   Their waxes are by far my favorite –  pure, natural,NO SMELL, easy to apply, quick to dry, and buff to a nice sheen.  Equally ❤ is their ALTERNATIVE to wax –  the Topcoat Finish.  I can’t tell you how many people come into our store, not even realizing that anything other than WAX exists –  I call it a necessity for scenarios like cabinets, an every day table, vanity and desk tops, kids furniture…   Topcoat is like brushing on water – no need to thin, it dries quick, leave a mild satin finish, and cures to a harder finish than wax.

I snapped a bunch of pictures, some aren’t the clearest but I’ll post for now and update later.     Also (eeeek) I didn’t flip each over and snap the back to get the description – that would have been too much work, right?   But now I wish I had, because I’m not certain what some of them are.   Instead of holding back the post, I’m going to get it up, then I’ll verify the finishes and get clearer photos for the blurry ones, later this week.

Along with the layered color samples, a full set of American Paint 12 inch color samples, finished off with various topcoats, joined our APC counter –

Our original set of 12 inch solid color boards   show each color Topcoated (APC’s waterbased sealer) and Clear Waxed.   This new set expands the solid color, showing a variety of finishes –  Dark Wax, Black Wax,  Mica Waxes like Gold, Pewter, Copper,  Silver,  Topcoat and Glaze…

When you play with the colors, and add different topcoats, it’s amazing how many new FAVORITES you discover  – I found several new ones myself 🙂

  1. Wow! so helpful! So many people are visual…it really helps to see the combinations when deciding on a project…just like the little cardboard thingies in the paint store.

Assuming the APC product is thin? How does one proceed if one wants to “fill in”, say, builders grade oak so the oak pattern is gone… and then paint on a smooth finish with an APC color.

Would you use Caromal Colors as a base, or some type of primer? and then do a layer of APC? Not wanting a lot of distressing – more smooth.

    thx – Sunny

    • The APC isnt thin thin – but it will lay down when you brush it out – i like to brush thinner coats, and it typically takes me 2 lean coats to get a nicer more even brushed application, with that said, remember all brushed paints typically will show brush strokes, more or less, depending on how you apply – reason why i always light sand my flat surfaces with a 180 grit paper – when you want a cleaner application you just dont sand too far to get to cabinet finish. i say its one reason the paints (caromal’s textured basecoats are brushed on too but they are a little more full bodied, i sand the flats of that finish too) are popular – because you can finesse your finish easily, as refined or as unrefined as one wishes. But once light sanded, I think the APC does a nice job of hiding oak grain – the textured basecoats probably hide the grain the most, but dont know if i’d go thru the work of laying that one first, because again, to get a smoother finish you’d need tp brush a couple coats thin, then light sand to knock down your app marks – THEN you’d have to go over it with APC – too much work for me – but many many times i DO use the textured basecoats UNDER the APC – but one coat, brushed thin, to create a nice textured ‘straight grain’ kind of thing, THEN one layer of APC – then I sand – but that gives a cool finish the one set of drawers in the last photos.

Caromal’s Reclaim would be the one you DONT sand – its meant to ROLL on larger surfaces, like cabinets, and has a built in sealer so you dont want to be sanding the flat surfaces– you dont need to anyway, cuz you wont have brush marks – make sense? The Reclaim, I’d say, will cover the grain the least, but still makes a nice looking finish – and we get alot of customers that dont mind seeing a little grain. hope this helps!

Totally Amazing…can’t even imagine how many hours this took!
