Yes, American Paint Company offers a great lineup of all natural chalk clay paints
but one of the big reasons we chose to partner with APC is their fabulous lineup of TOPCOAT options.
See that word OPTIONS? Love it.
First, they have , IMO, the best wax on the market. There is no smell, its light and whippy, safe, ALL NATURAL, it dries fast, its easy to use
and the dark wax (brown) doesn’t require a barrier coat , even for a first timer
In the beginning, God made chalk paint. And He created wax. And pieces of painted, waxed furniture landed on blogs all over the earth, and a colorful place called Pinterest.
WAX WAX WAX …
I love wax, but I don’t use it for every piece I do, and I don’t recommend it for many of my client’s that ask my opinion. Explain?
Wax is a great option for sealing painted furniture that won’t be handled alot, or in high traffic areas – like a china cabinet in a dining room. Wax is a great option, too, for pieces that hang on a wall. When my client is a mom with an active family, I don’t recommend wax for her kitchen table, or chairs. A loving mom refinishing a few pieces for their child’s dorm room? Wax isn’t my choice. Bathroom cabinets? Nope. Kitchen cabinets? No way.
Another reason I’ll explain the options to wax?
– When my customer is just starting to get their feet wet
– When my customer says they change their mind alot
When you’re newer to painting, there’s no way of knowing until you do.
Just Do It.
You learn with each piece you paint, and many times you’ll find yourself saying ‘I love it, but if I did it over again I’d do xxxxx differently, because NOW I understand how it works. You can’t repaint over wax. You don’t glaze over wax. If you’re disappointed in your piece, and want to revise it, you’ll first have to remove that wax, otherwise more paint won’t stay put.
APC TOPCOAT FINISH
Remember that word OPTIONS? As much as I love APC’s waxes, I equally love this product
APC Topcoat is a water-based, zero voc sealer that reminds me of milk colored water. When dry, it adds a soft sheen to your paint finish. Best of all, its super easy – it’s like brushing on a coat of water over your dry paint. It dries quick – 20-30 minutes. One coat will seal your finish, 2-3 coats will add more durability/washablitity, as well as kick up the sheen. Topcoat will dry and cure to a hard, washable protective coating.
– furniture going off to a dorm 🙂
-kitchen tables, end tables, night stand tops
– bathroom cabinets
Why do I like Topcoat?
– You can glaze WAY easier over Topcoated Chalk/Clay paint. Glazes are a a great way to add interest to your piece. If you paint and Topcoat a piece and live with it a few days and decide you’d like it more subtle? Simple, just brush on a glaze. Glazes can be intense (stronger tint) or subtle – you can add shimmer with glaze – you can leave glaze heavier to add depth and dimension – you can’t leave excess wax on .
– YOU CAN WAX OVER TOPCOAT! I do it all the time – its almost like a pretty buffing overtop your piece – it adds a softness, but is still more durable (will hold up to your kids rough and toughness) than wax alone because it has the Topcoat under it.
– It doesn’t yellow. I’m not a fan of poly, even water based, over porous chalky, clay paints. I feel like the surface is too porous, and the product soaks in and disappears. The Topcoat is so easy to work with, once you use it you’ll be hooked.
APC HARD COAT
American Paint add’s a big gun to their Finishes lineup with the newly introduced Hard Coat
Hard Coat, like their other Finishes, is zero voc, and solvent free. It, too, can be brushed on, which I found very easy to do, and it dries pretty fast, with no real smell. It’s water resistant and very durable to scratching.
Over the porous paints, one coat covers and leaves more of a finished look, and feel, than the Topcoat does. One coat would definitely be sufficient for a buffet or nightstand top. Kitchen table I’d do a couple coats, same with kitchen cabinets – at least 2, maybe 3 on doors of high use. It can be watered down if you want to use it for a less needy surface, like the base of a buffet.
And best of all, it is now available at Fabulous Finishes, in store and online – as well as the other Finishes. I will be posting up close photos of the topcoat vs. the hardcoat – look for those later this week.
In the mean time, I DID find time, yesterday, to give ”Frankie” a touch up –
