Don’t you wish this time of year would move slower? I do.
Thanksgiving came and went – It was so nice to spend a few days with family, and to see my college boy again 🙂 I miss him.
He brought home a bug, and by time he went back to school the whole house was infested. This is SO me right now
I shouldn’t complain, it’s been years since I’ve had the flu. Not bad right?
I left off on this Stanley hutch – no curves, pretty straight lined…. it was a light yellow oak, and we brushed a coat of Caromal Colours textured basecoat chocolate over it to start –
When I got a test batch of Caromal’s Botanical Paint to try, I tried it out on this piece. I used Salvia, a grey blue, and brushed it thin and sheer, so I could easily sand back to the chocolate brown
I got the Salvia 1/2 on and then let it sit. The problem with pieces that you don’t ‘FEEL’? You get bored, you stop before you’re done, and you don’t go back to it.
When the full stock of Botanicals arrived, we wanted to SEE the colors on something bigger than a sample board. This piece, lost behind others, caught my eye. Maybe I’d like it better if it was more colorful?
We painted the outside Moss, a lighter celery green
and the inside Boxwood, a darker green
The Botanical paints levels out really nice, so I really only needed to sand to get down to the brown Chocolate textured paint that was under it, and then a little further more to hit the natural wood.
The next day, one of our AGED MONAHAN PAPER orders arrived – and in it was a print I couldn’t wait to see in person –
How fun is this? I had no clue what I was going to do with him, so it was perfect that we JUST HAPPENED to have a piece 1/2 painted, that fit perfectly with Mr. Fuzzy Balls…
I mounted him on the doors, using Reclaim Sealer and a tiny squirt of glue, and accented with two more colors, Botanical Dahlia
and Botanical Aster
Even though the Botanical paint does not require a topcoat (the paint is durable on it’s own) I prefer brushing a topcoat over it to give it some uummpph. I brushed this piece with Reclaim Sealer, super easy, fast, and a nice little luster.
I spruced up the original drawer pulls, and swapped out four others with vintage crystal knobs –
What first started as just ‘simple painted boring piece to portray paint colors’ was turning into a creative explosion. I added random polka’s using Aster and Moss
added Swarovski’s to each dot, because this girl has a hard time doing anything without sparkle….
The drawers were nice and clean so I stained and detailed inside the drawers…
These papers are addicting –
I love how the Botanical colors
inspired by Monahan Paper’s Botanical Collection of prints, work so perfectly with the papers they hand create –
Tomorrow morning we tape the fifth episode of DIY SHELBY TV. This one will walk through the steps of painting and mounting an aged paper to a winter stool. We will put the link up for viewing on youtube as soon as it is available.
I head from my web man and we are any day close to launching part one of our new site, the online store! I am so excited, we’ve held back adding items, like these papers, until everything is in place. Once live they’ll then focus on transitioning this blog to a more user friendly layout. You’ll access it the same way, but the looks will change.
