Shelby DIY TV #7 – Simple Countertop Paint Finishes

Our customers frequently ask  –

Can I use these paints on my Formica counters?

Does it stay on?

Is it labor intensive?

Is it expensive?

Our typical answers-

Yes, all of our various DIY paint lines will ‘technically’ adhere to formica, without sanding, stripping, priming,  but we definitely favor a few over the others, for longer durability. Caromal Colours Reclaim line of paints offers a  paint specifically for countertops, and Caromal’s Artisan Collection’s Textured Basecoats work great for counters (heck, any) surfaces as well.

The paint finishes, properly sealed, cure to a durable, washable surface.  I’ll often point at our entry ceramic tile, that 1 1/2 yrs ago received a similar paint finish, and it still looks fabulous (you can find that post here)

Labor intensive?  I wouldn’t call it that – the most you’ll get is an arm workout or wrist cramp…

The cost,  an average $65 for a solid color, (paint, sealer, roller) to $125 for multiple colors for layering or adding dimension.

The simplest, most straight forward finish – Reclaim Countertop Paint – a bonder, primer, finisher paint,  no sanding, stripping or priming needed.

Roll on 2 coats of paint,  add RECLAIM Countertop Flecks (optional), and RECLAIM Multi-purpose Sealer for a durable, washable surface.

My favorite paints to start with,  on surfaces like formica, ceramic, marble or glass, are the Textured Basecoat Paints, also by Caromal Colours (part of their Artisan Collection).  Again, no sanding, stripping or priming needed.  It is a thicker, buttery, get all jiggy with it kind of paint.

I always start by whiz rolling 1-2 coats of textured basecoat

Two coats, rolled , and some glaze, can create a really cool look ( see a start to finish counter like this, here ).

You can roll a coat of Reclaim, then a coat of  textured basecoat , light sand and glaze, for looks like this

It all comes down to fiddling…. sampling…  playing around with the paints… you NEED to do this – grab some old boards, paneling, even cardboard, and get a feel for what these paints do B4 tackling your counters –
