Updating Old Wroght Iron Glass Table and Chairs

Perfect timing,  outdoors in Michigan –  instant 90 plus degree heat!  Boy, did we miss the pool scene this holiday weekend…

We were away last week on a much needed family sneak-away

prior to our trip the weather was blech mode, a cold wet Spring.  I swear we came back and everything was lush and green,  and seemed like everyone had their  flowers in the ground!

It was nice being back for a week, only to roll into a sweet holiday weekend.  I made a valiant attempt to get the yard in order –  I planted flowers, and got the hubby to hang that cool Moroccan tin light fixture that I used to have hanging in my store

The nice thing about having paints and such on hand?   It doesn’t matter WHAT color bracket your man comes home with!   It wasn’t white for long  🙂

One of the videos I made with Shelby TV was transforming a wrought iron table/chair set from my childhood

It had made its rounds with my siblings, eventually no one had a need for  it, so my mom gave it to me.  It was looking it’s age, but my mom knew I could breathe new live into it, and find a new owner….

Mom changed the fabric on the seat pads many times, I think the frame itself may even have been painted various shades of color.   I wanted to give it more of a darker bronze finish.   I started with Texture Basecoat by Caromal Colours as the first coat – an amazing paint I’ve used enough to know –  it bonds to metal no problemo!

I used that same  Textured Basecoat (Peppercorn)  and bladed it through a stencil (Cherry Blossoms) .  Using the thicker paint created an embossed stencil on the glass, and again, I’d used this paint enough times on glass to know it would hold up to wear and tear.  Using thicker mediums requires adequate dry time, so after each stencil pass I had to wait hours before I could continue on with it’s allover pattern  (patience is a virtue…)

The Textured Basecoat was the first coat, a metallic over that, a light sanding to pop some texture,  then glaze and sealer….  the chair pads were boosted and recovered

and the allover design on the glass top was accented with various Decorative Foils  , and easy process and oh so pretty  –

This set was around when I was a kid, growing up in Riverview.   It was the perfect size for the four seasons room off the back off our house.   If I had a room like that present day, I’d have kept this set – instead it went to a lovely home that, no lie,  had a four seasons room off their back!  (I know because we delivered it to her!!)

I have the online store how I’d like it.  Almost.   So I’m moving back to posting.  If you find something quirky or missing with the online store  let me know and I’ll fix it quick  🙂

Let’s start with projects customers have shared – many of these customers were brand new to this thing called ‘paint it yourself’.   No better way to inspire you!

American Paint Company Fireworks Red, Stencil detail, APC Black Wax

Too many of these custom wall units around to count, right? Here’s Michelle and Joe’s before –

Good chance you’ve tried selling, or checked around to see if it held any value….Look no further-

Beyond Linen with Molasses Glaze

Oak updated to WHITE with Beyond Bright White

These are all homeowners painting their own stuff –  that equates to big time savings….

Arrghhh…  not sure what this color is, but the cabinet is lovely!

Beyond’s Pewter is like a glamorous model in photos,  here’s Lisa’s glam redo-

More oak cabinets…  don’t have the paint color the used, reminds me of Beyond White or Offwhite with a Molasses or Dark Grey  Glaze?

Nanette refinished a side table using Botanical Mulberry and one of our European Aged Papers on the drawer front –

If you’re drawn to these papers, and would like to see our process of apply and aging around them,  you can watch the Episode 5 video I taped with Shelby TV .

Ann updated her oak cabinets with Beyond Nantucket

Ann said: These are 30 yr old cupboards – Used your product Beyond Reclaim (Nantucket) & sealed with your satin water based sealer.  Very satisfied.  Love the new look.

Jess took on a paint project for her MIL – this was the inspiration photo

Just that little bit of white pops this set!

These cabinets were originally white laminate.   A blend of Beyond Pebble and Beyond Versailles (now retired but similar to Soft Grey) , with Molasses Glaze and Umber Glaze –

Mary had fun using our Aged Papers in various ways.  Here is one, she used Botanical Mulberry and accented a cabinet front with one of the papers –
Sharon refinished her oak kitchen cabinets with Beyond Offwhite and Coffee Glaze

Beyond’s Mocha dark brown on the island –

For 34 doors she used 3/4 gallon of Offwhite,   3 thin coats both sides,    16 ounce glaze, and 16 ounce sealer with 2 coats.  (she opted to add an additional sealer for extra durability)

Kathy said:   My husband and I were in your store before Christmas looking for finishes for a frame project. After looking at the “fabulous ” samples we decided on Beyond Licorice base paint, Metallic Statuary Bronze and your Black Glaze. This was so different from what I had originally thought to do and the result was “fabulous “. The directions offered for using the finishes was easy to follow and very helpful.

I don’t recall the color used over this oak kitchen, but I do remember being wow’d at the time –  LOVED the way they finished off the island – lets say they used either Beyond Pebble or Soft Grey –

maybe our lovely customer that transformed this kitchen will see this and confirm the color used 🙂

Annalee updated her bathroom cabinets using Beyond Pebble and our Molasses Glaze

Jennifer and her husband started with a room full of traditional cherry furniture

–  We used the Beyond Reclaim Paint mixing Pebble and White in a 2/1 ratio.  We also used your Dark Grey Glaze and then your topcoat Matte Sealer. We love it and the paint was easy to work with.

How romantic this room feels, the soft grey color playing off the natural floor and calming blue walls –

LOVE IT!

Irene’s husband refinished parts of their great room furniture- don’t remember the exact color used –

Blessings to you!

A Long Weekend, Dedicated To The Place I Call Home…

Weekends  aren’t the same when you own a retail business.   A holiday weekend is no different.

Saturday evening was warm and sunny in Detroit.  I pulled up to our flower-pot-less house, and couldn’t help but notice the other houses around us, all perky with colorful flowers…   some were still out tending to their yards.

colorful-flower-garden

I did purchase 4  coco lined deck planter boxes a couple weekends ago –  my mom always hung planter boxes off her deck and I loved them – and filled them with colorful annuals, but that’s all I’ve done so far.

Yards…. outdoor spaces…  all of their pretty spaces just made me grumble at ours.  Does that ever happen to you?

Needless to say, I let the negative thinking get me down – how could THAT happen, with all the Joyce Meyer I listen to?

Sunday morning after church I felt an urge –  not to plant, but to paint.   Honestly, I feel like God was saying to me

Why don’t you make that house feel like home?

I decided to tackle the library.   I’ve had 2 frames from Kirklands that I don’t use anymore – they looked kinda like this

121117

and my plan was to use them to display my kids senior photos.  They’ve been propped in the library since last year when my son graduated.  Now, with my daughter in her last week of high school, was a good time to get it done.

Here was my Sunday project – the walls, prior, were builder beige…

I combined several colors of metallic plaster that I had on the shelves – Lusterstone Weathered Bronze, Lusterstone Silver Taupe, Lusterstone Ebony and mixed them all together to get a carbon color, and rolled and troweled that onto the walls.

The frames I took apart,  whiz rolled the cardboard matte with Perfect Plaster tinted grey, and then a scraped layer over top.  I dragged Textured Basecoat Peppercorn, Chocolate and Parchment over the frames, and then topped it with a little Botanical Salvia.    I wish I had taken a before and after …

Sunday night I was exhausted,  it took me all the way until midnight to get the room back together,  but it felt good to finally get something done.

Monday, I woke up and decided to tackle the kitchen

kitchen before

I didn’t think it would take long, since there wasn’t that much wall space, but I was wrong….  I didn’t get the kitchen put back together until late in the evening…

I’ve said for sometime that I wanted to use Caromal’s Perfect Plaster in my kitchen – I love the simpleness of the finish – I whizz rolled the first coat and scraped on the second coat

The simple scraping of that second layer draws up that natural color –

I cleaned and packed everything up, then realized I forgot the two ends of our island!   Crap…   I’ll have to finish that this weekend.

All in all,  I love how it warmed up our space

Maybe next weekend I’ll add a few flower pots to the front porch 🙂

This is a big week for us – my daughter’s High School Soccer team start their race again for district, regional and the state title.  First game is tonight!

Happy painting!
