A Long Weekend, Dedicated To The Place I Call Home…

Weekends  aren’t the same when you own a retail business.   A holiday weekend is no different.

Saturday evening was warm and sunny in Detroit.  I pulled up to our flower-pot-less house, and couldn’t help but notice the other houses around us, all perky with colorful flowers…   some were still out tending to their yards.

colorful-flower-garden

I did purchase 4  coco lined deck planter boxes a couple weekends ago –  my mom always hung planter boxes off her deck and I loved them – and filled them with colorful annuals, but that’s all I’ve done so far.

Yards…. outdoor spaces…  all of their pretty spaces just made me grumble at ours.  Does that ever happen to you?

It’s easy for me to get in a punky mood about our outside space.  The landscaping is new and puny compared to the more mature plantings of our neighbors,  we don’t have a service walk running from the driveway to the back yard, and I miss that.     Our driveway is super short, making it hard to back out and NOT hit any vehicles that are parked in the street…  wait – am I blaming the driveway for hitting my daughter’s boyfriends jeep this weekend?

head

If that’s not bad enough,  the backyard is sprinkled with power boxes.  They aren’t lined up nicely next to the house – no, it’s like they were tossed into the air and where they landed is where they stayed.    Because it makes no sense,  I’ve been unable to wrap my brain around the HOW’s to disguising them…

Needless to say, I let the negative thinking get me down – how could THAT happen, with all the Joyce Meyer I listen to?

Sunday morning after church I felt an urge –  not to plant, but to paint.   Honestly, I feel like God was saying to me

Hey,  why don’t you make that house feel like home?

I decided to tackle the library.   I’ve had 2 frames from Kirklands that I don’t use anymore – they looked kinda like this

121117

and my plan was to use them to display my kids senior photos.  They’ve been propped in the library since last year when my son graduated.  Now, with my daughter in her last week of high school, was a good time to get it done.

Here was my Sunday project – the walls, prior, were builder beige…

metallic_plaster_walls_dark_fabulous_finishes

I combined several colors of metallic plaster that I had on the shelves – Lusterstone Weathered Bronze, Lusterstone Silver Taupe, Lusterstone Ebony and a good bit of Moire Dark Granite, mixed them all together to get a carbon color, and rolled and troweled that onto the walls. The ceiling I whiz rolled with our custom Cottage Paint color Ash.

painted_frames_metallic_plaster_walls

The frames I took apart,  whiz rolled the cardboard matte with Perfect Plaster tinted grey, and then a scraped layer over top.  I dragged Textured Basecoat Peppercorn, Chocolate and Parchment over the frames, and then topped it with a little Botanical Salvia.    I wish I had taken a before and after …

Sunday night I was exhausted,  it took me all the way until midnight to get the room back together,  but it felt good to finally get something done.

Monday, I woke up and decided to tackle the kitchen

kitchen before

I didn’t think it would take long, since there wasn’t that much wall space, but I was wrong….  I didn’t get the kitchen put back together until late in the evening…

I’ve said for sometime that I wanted to use Caromal’s Perfect Plaster in my kitchen – I love the simpleness of the finish – I whizz rolled the first coat and scraped on the second coat

first_coat_rolled_perfect_plaster

close_up_perfect_plaster_walls

The simple scraping of that second layer draws up that natural color –

kitchen_closeup_complete_perfect_plaster_wall_finish

I cleaned and packed everything up, then realized I forgot the two ends of our island!   Crap…   I’ll have to finish that this weekend.

All in all,  I love how it warmed up our space

kitchen_after_perfect_plaster_walls_caromal

Maybe next weekend I’ll add a few flower pots to the front porch 🙂

This is a big week for us – my daughter’s High School Soccer team start their race again for district, regional and the state title.  First game is tonight, and unfortunately I won’t be there due to a sold out Paint A Piece Workshop.    Go IKE!    After this week she is officially out of high school!

I also just received the link to our latest DIY show –  I’ll be posting that soon.

Happy painting!

At The Fab, Paint Can Top Anything…

Love this time of year – the berry sprigs, pine needles, and snow tipped branches packed away, and blooming flowers take their place.  I arranged these pretty stems in a burlap container that I stenciled using our Postage Stamp Stencil and Caromal Colours Stencil Creme Mother Earth

Fabulous_finishes_painted_burlap_pots

This black metal vase turned patina easily, dragging Botanical Paint Aster, Moss and a little Gardenia.  No topcoat is required, as the Botanical Paints will stay put once dry,  but the finish will be chalky flat –  Fabulous_finishes_painted_chalk_clay_urn

A barn door was already crackled, easily achieved using Cottage Paint’s Easy Crackle and Cottage Wonderous White,  or Elmers Glue and American Paint Company Navajo White.  I added a stamp stencil using Caromal Colours Stencil Creme Mother Earth

Fabulous_finishes_painted_door_stamp

This frame, originally teal and zebra,  changed it’s look using Reclaim Nantucket Blue.  I applied a dimensional FISH BONES stencil using Texture Plaster, and stenciled a metallic crown, decorating it with Swarovski Crystals. Did I mention we’ll be adding those to our online store this week?  I found a fun lady-catches-big-fish picture to display, knowing it would appeal to one of our many cottage/boater customers.    It wasn’t around long…

Fabulous_finishes_painted_fish_frame

This basket is original – a weave of grapevine and moss…  it holds plaster ornaments that I gilded, using several variegated patterns of leaf.   If gilding interests you, take a peak at our online video from Shelby TV Episode 1

Fabulous_finishes_painted_gilded_ornaments

I acquired this pair of ‘fruit art’ from an estate sale.  They were horribly gaudy – painted goldish plastic resin.  I painted them with Caromal Textured Basecoat Candy Apple Red, to give them some ‘uummph’ ,  and then topped that with Reclaim Black Licorice.   I painted the fruit and leaves with Modern Masters Metal Effects Bronze and Copper, (arriving online soon), and then oxidized the metal paint using their Green and Blue Patina Aging Solution (arriving online soon).  Lastly, I applied Caromal’s Antiquing Toner

Fabulous_finishes_painted_plaster_fruit

Not something you see often…

Fabulous_finishes_painted_plaster_fruit_grapes

We had several decorative wooden balls in house, in a state of boring brown… I dry brushed them with Botanical Aster, and dry brushed the vintage chair spring with APC Navajo White.  These springs are so fun,  I can’t believe they were an integral chair part of past…

Fabulous_finishes_painted_balls

Smaller shelf units, wooden stools, ladders, make great items to decorate with paint, and then display fun wares…  this one was painted with Caromal Textured Basecoat Pumpkin, Botanical Aster, and then stenciled with Caromal Stencil Creme Mother Earth.

It already has found a new home 🙂

With the nicer weather comes that crazy  hot, afternoon sun, beating in the front windows…  the UV film doesn’t cut the mustard.   We brainstormed about mounting drape panels on the big windows that flank the door – we could swag them to one side until its SUN BLAST time, then let them down. Gonna try that.

But what about the small window over the door?     I used one of our repeat medallion stencils (see the four parts?), and a plastic gift card to apply, via scraping/blading, Caromal Textured Basecoat Peppercorn

Fabulous_finishes_paint_stencil_medallion_dimension_glass

and from the outside…

Fabulous_finishes_paint_stenciled_glass_window_medallion

Which takes me to these pretty young things… This year’s door greeters –

Fabulous_finishes_paint_store_entry_detroit

I had these 2 urn planters from several Christmases ago.  Originally, they were single, prelit, pine ball topiary’s, in a resin urn.   That first year was a huge disappointment – the cords submerged in water, then froze over,  so you couldn’t even get to the wires to fix them.    I brought them to the store after Christmas, plucked the bad stuff out, and used them as decorative store displays…

pine_urn_planter_fall_decor

They took up a lot of room though, and I wanted outdoor planters, so I decided to go BIG on these planters…

I found fake ‘tall boxwood topiary’s ‘ at Big Lot, and inserted them into the original pine balls,  making sure they were secure.   Then I went to work adding various flowers and foliage to each base.

Fabulous_finishes_paint_textured_outside_pots_caromal

The paint finish on the urns looked worn – I refreshed it using Caromal Textured Basecoat Paprika, dry brushed Cottage Paint Bold Black, sprayed on gold Webbing veins, then gave it a coating of Caromal Toner.  Once good and dry I applied a coat of Reclaim Indoor/Outdoor Sealer, since they will be outside.

Fabulous_finishes_paintedpots

The tops needed some whimsy,  I added wood twigs, and green sprigs, and bird nests, and bows… even a few little crystal thinga-majigs on wire…

Fabulous_finishes_studio_topary

Aren’t they fun?

Fabulous_finishes_painted_store_topary

The before frame

Fabulous_finishes_frame_art_before_painting_chalk

I used a similar process that I did, up above, on those resin fruit frames – oxidizing metal paint with a blue and green patina.  It blended so perfect with the photo…

Fabulous_finishes_painted_verdegris_framed_art

Naturally old world worn looking…

Fabulous_finishes_painted_verdegris_art_frame

Another frame I painted, this original was black – I dry brushed it with Caromal Textured Basecoat Putty, Botanical Willow,  and Gardenia and decorated the inside with an Aged Paper Receipt

Fabulous_finishes_painted_restoration_hardware_frame

Different paints, different textures, different results… use them on their own, or mix them together like I did here –

Fabulous_finishes_painted_restoration_hardware

This metal stand was raw bright tin colored.  I painted it Cottage Paint Gorgeous Grey (one of our custom colors), then stenciled it with Caromal Stencil Creme Winterberry

Fabulous_finishes_painted_stencil

Stenciling more burlap containers…

Fabulous_finishes_painted_stenciled_burlap

Stenciling a stuffed mannequin,  painting tin tags…   both seem to come alive with paint –

Fabulous_finishes_painted_tin_tags

This original vase was one of my own – a glossy greenish ceramic vase,  now vintage white, and home to a lovely bird house…

Time Flies, Even When You’re Not Having Fun!

April arrived, set to be a busy month.  Easter morning we were on a plane, flying out of Detroit, on our way to a big ship in the ocean, chaperoning our daughter and five friends during spring break.   A year ago we were on our way to Mexico for my son’s spring break…

Milestones like this make me think back, way back….   when did my kids grow up?

It was busy the week before I left –  multiple workshops, and I’d been working on completing this custom painted vanity for a client –

painted_chalk_clay_vanity_voyage_2

They wanted it similar to this piece I’d painted –

DSC_5505

I used American Paint Company Voyage, and Stenciled with various APC colors, and sealed with APC Hardcoat and Topcoat Finish

painted_chalk_clay_vanity_voyage

The week off was a lovely change – the weather was perfect every day – I soaked in the vitamin D and much needed sleep

IMG_4464

Even while away from work, I’d find myself noticing things – like this guy’s shirt that looked like one of our Monahan Botanical papers

or the paint colors as we ventured on island excursions…IMG_4541

I was drawn to this designer – such artistic detail

The week was a whirl – I  got moving on a customer’s vanity – she wants a metallic finish with a wood grained look on the top

I’m about 2/3’s done…

I had to quote painting a 15 foot statue (she’s in parts) for a popular yearly music festival music – Electric Forest –  held in Rothbury, Michigan.

???????????????????????????????????????????????

If I get the job, they’d deliver her to my studio in a large crate  – a crate full of body parts 🙂   How cool would that be?   Would love to turn her into an earthy queen of the forest…

Saturday ended this action packed back-to-work week, with another monthly taping of Shelby DIY TV.   This show will discuss taking items you can find around the house,  painting them in a variety of ways,  and then protecting them with Caromal’s awesome Reclaim Indoor/Outdoor Sealer

Old pots and pans can make great outdoor (even indoor) wall art –

shelby_diy_tv_painted_fry_pan_patio_decor

same with very over sized grilling tools

What about the cheap clamp light – granted, not made for outdoor use, but I’d use this under my patio umbrella for a night of ambiance…   just take it inside when the evening is over.

shelby_diy_tv_painted_patio_light

A Salvation Army find – 2 identical Fisher Price plastic trucks – in the TV show it picks up a load of pansies 🙂

How many of us have these glass vases from past flower deliveries, stuffed in a cupboard?   Perfect for decorating your summer table…

Even plastic ware can get a new look –

shelby_diy_tv_strainer_planter_plastic

This strainer was stinkin cute with the pansies in it –

I’ll share the link this week once the episode is live.

I ended Saturday waxing the purple piece – purple_ombre_paint_chalk_wax

I’ll buff it this week, and probably should put the glass back in it. Is it just me, or do you also prefer these sans glass?   A few minor ‘tweeks’ and this one will be complete .

Our new shopping site is coming along – STORE.FABFINISHER.COM .   Our original shopping site is still functional, and won’t be removed until our credit card merchant, Chase, passes all of its safety requirements, for accepting credit payments.  It might already of happened, last I heard it was any day.

It’s good feeling to be back –  until next time,  happy painting!

In Honor Of The Red White and Blue… American Paint Style

I was looking through my work pictures, trying to find  a ‘before’ of the bathroom at my store –  this last week I decided 1  1/2 years was long enough to have an ugly restroom…

Instead of finding the pre-bathroom picture, I found this project, waiting to be shared, and thought it appropriate for this holiday weekend 🙂

I garbage picked this dresser- the shell was solid but the inside guts were junk- a piece not worthy to paint and sell, but perfect for a floor display, which I was in need of when I acquired the American Paint line  (yes, over a year ago – told you I had alot of projects to share 🙂 ).

DSC_2141

The plan was to use Blue Jeans, Shining Seas,Fireworks Red and Navajo White and see what I could come up with-

DSC_2143

DSC_2142

DSC_2149

I brushed Blue Jeans out on top, and then brushed fat stripes with Shining Seas.  The front went Fireworks Red, and the sides got a mix of it all, creating a cool darker blue…

Now the perfect ending –  last night we were at friends celebrating the 4th.  My son was with his buddies for a night of fireworks and camp fires. He came home today, still in his clothes from yesterday, and his shoulders looked wierd – like remnants of blue – maybe a temporary tatoo?   Firework powder/resin?

Nope –  he told me he drove by the store last night (he has a key, which maybe I need to rethink) –  because he wanted to ‘wear’ his spirit/freedom –  he told me the Shining Seas, Fireworks Red and Uncle Sam were perfect!
