Janie Refinishes Her Trays With Aged Papers

So thankful, grateful and blessed for my customers!

Dear Patti,

I just received my recent order from your store.  There was a container of Country Living textured paint, Cobble stone, included with my order.   I did not order it and there was no additional charge for it.  Was this a mistake or did you include it in the order.   If it was a mistake I will gladly pay for it.

I am attaching two pictures of my DIYs with your aged papers.  I wanted to let you know how helpful your Youtube videos are.  Those are old TV trays that I put the papers on.   Thank you so much for all of your help with the coordinating colors.

I am looking forward to using more of the papers.

Thank you,
Janie H

Janie,  your trays have come to life!

Thank you for sharing,  it makes my heart smile!

ps) the sampling of Cobblestone was added in as a thanks,  hope you enjoy 🙂

Our Customer Painting Projects

I have the online store how I’d like it.  Almost.   So I’m moving back to posting.  If you find something quirky or missing with the online store  let me know and I’ll fix it quick  🙂

Let’s start with projects customers have shared – many of these customers were brand new to this thing called ‘paint it yourself’.   No better way to inspire you!

American Paint Company Fireworks Red, Stencil detail, APC Black Wax

Too many of these custom wall units around to count, right? Here’s Michelle and Joe’s before –

Good chance you’ve tried selling, or checked around to see if it held any value….Look no further-

Beyond Linen with Molasses Glaze

Oak updated to WHITE with Beyond Bright White

These are all homeowners painting their own stuff –  that equates to big time savings….

Arrghhh…  not sure what this color is, but the cabinet is lovely!

Beyond’s Pewter is like a glamorous model in photos,  here’s Lisa’s glam redo-

More oak cabinets…  don’t have the paint color the used, reminds me of Beyond White or Offwhite with a Molasses or Dark Grey  Glaze?

Nanette refinished a side table using Botanical Mulberry and one of our European Aged Papers on the drawer front –

If you’re drawn to these papers, and would like to see our process of apply and aging around them,  you can watch the Episode 5 video I taped with Shelby TV .

Ann updated her oak cabinets with Beyond Nantucket

Ann said: These are 30 yr old cupboards – Used your product Beyond Reclaim (Nantucket) & sealed with your satin water based sealer.  Very satisfied.  Love the new look.

Jess took on a paint project for her MIL – this was the inspiration photo

Just that little bit of white pops this set!

These cabinets were originally white laminate.   A blend of Beyond Pebble and Beyond Versailles (now retired but similar to Soft Grey) , with Molasses Glaze and Umber Glaze –

Mary had fun using our Aged Papers in various ways.  Here is one, she used Botanical Mulberry and accented a cabinet front with one of the papers –
Sharon refinished her oak kitchen cabinets with Beyond Offwhite and Coffee Glaze

Beyond’s Mocha dark brown on the island –

For 34 doors she used 3/4 gallon of Offwhite,   3 thin coats both sides,    16 ounce glaze, and 16 ounce sealer with 2 coats.  (she opted to add an additional sealer for extra durability)

Kathy said:   My husband and I were in your store before Christmas looking for finishes for a frame project. After looking at the “fabulous ” samples we decided on Beyond Licorice base paint, Metallic Statuary Bronze and your Black Glaze. This was so different from what I had originally thought to do and the result was “fabulous “. The directions offered for using the finishes was easy to follow and very helpful.

I don’t recall the color used over this oak kitchen, but I do remember being wow’d at the time –  LOVED the way they finished off the island – lets say they used either Beyond Pebble or Soft Grey –

maybe our lovely customer that transformed this kitchen will see this and confirm the color used 🙂

Annalee updated her bathroom cabinets using Beyond Pebble and our Molasses Glaze

Jennifer and her husband started with a room full of traditional cherry furniture

–  We used the Beyond Reclaim Paint mixing Pebble and White in a 2/1 ratio.  We also used your Dark Grey Glaze and then your topcoat Matte Sealer. We love it and the paint was easy to work with.

How romantic this room feels, the soft grey color playing off the natural floor and calming blue walls –

LOVE IT!

Irene’s husband refinished parts of their great room furniture- don’t remember the exact color used –

You can find everything used here in our online store – I’ve tried to link the paints as they were mentioned,  if you have any questions you can post them in the comments section .  For how to’s or basics on painting cabinets, or how to paint a chair, you might find my video section helpful – there are over a dozen episodes, each with a specific project – you can see with your own eyes how easy it is to tackle your own paint project!

Ok, going to bed. Going to get this posted, and I’ll edit any type-o’s in the morning with fresh eyes 🙂

Blessings to you!

We Love When Our Customers Share Their Projects!

It’s always fun to see what our customers are doing, how they tackle projects with our products…

Here are some recent pictures-
This kitchen was shared last time around, but the counters and a few other pretties weren’t complete. The proud owner shared a more recent photo of her updated kitchen – the before

Dawn visited her father in Florida, and his several pieces of oak furniture that no longer worked for him.  He wanted a lighter, weathered wood feel, and chose a barnworn finish on the table, and a softer color on the rest.

They used Textured Basecoat colors Putty and Wisteria with our Molasses Glaze.  The remaining pieces were painted with our Cottage Paint Wonder White, and our Less Intense Molasses Glaze.

One of our regular customers online, Katherine from Arkansas, shared this headboard project she completed:

Here’s a before and after – The first is the stripped raw wood with a watered down Reclaim Pebble. You can see half of the head board is done.

The second photo is after the Caromal Colours Toner was brushed on in in direction of the wood grain but not wiped back.  I just brushed until it no longer had streaks.   Toner worked beautifully! Over the weekend I tried different glazes and said to myself ” it just doesn’t have enough bite”  Then I remembered you saying how toner has a great bite to it! Thanks so much! It’s exactly the look I was going for.

LOVE IT!!

Shannon painted this cabinet using a custom teal Cottage Paint color we tinted for her.   This is a great way to accommodate our customers when they have a specific color in mind they they can’t find with our current line of paints.   She used some of our American Paint colors that she had left over from other projects to paint and stencil the inside –

This hope chest started its transformation in one of our Paint a Piece Workshops.  Our customer brought in the chest, minus the top (otherwise the piece would have been too large to complete) and painted it with our Cottage Paint custom color Vanilla.  Over that she used our American Paint Dark Vintage Wax to add that lovely antiquing effect, and a soft sheen and feel as well.

It’s a beautiful chest – she loved it for years in its darker form, but it was time for a lighter version.  I love that she can still appreciate this piece that holds meaning to her.

Aged Paper, Plaster and Canvas Workshop

This week we hosted an Aged Paper, Plaster and Canvas Workshop dealing with mounting papers on canvas, building and blending a border to mask the image edge using paint, plaster and wax.

fabulous_finishes_aged_paper_canvas_workshop_032916 (3)

The Aged Papers are addicting, we stock  a huge assortment, which makes choosing difficult…

fabulous_finishes_online_store_aged_papers (4)

The papers are 11×17,  and can be used in a variety of ways.   You could

  • slip them in a frame as is
  • line a drawer
  • create a focal wall
  • decorate larger furniture surfaces, like inside a china cabinet fabulous-finishes-studio-inspiration-painted-furniture-workshops-metro-detroit-diy-paints-shop-online0243
  • dressing up backs of furniture that will show in a roomfabulous_finishes_online_store_aged_papers (5)

Our current Aged Paper Workshop creates art on canvas.

We begin by painting the canvas with a base color we choose, then we dry.  The paper’s edges are scored, and then the mounting process begins, using our Durable Matte Sealer with a squirt of glue mixed in.

fabulous_finishes_aged_paper_canvas_workshop_032916 (5)

We work to smooth out wrinkles and bubbles, then once our art-in-process is dry we begin layering a combination of plaster and paint – a little here, a little there, some scraping, blending, fiddling, some more plaster or more paint, blend and fiddle some more…

fabulous_finishes_aged_paper_canvas_workshop_032916 (6)

This is the longest stretch of the workshop – it relies on each person’s own eye, deciding ‘where’ they want or need more color or dimension, it’s not an exact science,  it’s just a feelie kindof thing,  and it’s cool to watch 🙂

fabulous_finishes_aged_paper_canvas_workshop_032916 (7)

Once the fiddling is complete,  our canvas art is dried, and then a wax color (or colors) is selected, to finish off our piece.   I love American Paint Company’s Vintage Waxes – I rave about them a lot, and for good reason – they are simply the best!

I use  APC’s Vintage Clear Wax to create colored waxes by adding pigment tints – like one canvas used a blue wax in the final pass – I’ll add our mica powders to create various shimmer wax colors as well.   I create each color or shimmer into it’s own snap-deli container, so it’s an easy go-to-grab when I need it.

We used a variety of wax colors to finish off the canvas’s –  APC’s Dark Wax, which gives an umber vintage effect, and APC Wax custom tinted to Brass, Aged Gold, Pearl, Pewter, Shimmered Silver, Blue, and Black.

fabulous_finishes_aged_paper_canvas_workshop_032916 (13)

Pretty fun night – thank you ladies!!

The plaster we use, to blend and layer the edges is Caromal’s Perfect Plaster

perfect_plaster-buy_fabulous_finishes

It’s unlike any of our other plasters – it’s whippy, think paint folded with whipped crème, then sprinkle in some seeds or specks of little things that bust open when you scrape them.   I wont’ apply the paper’s without it.

It’s also cool as a wall finish, which is it’s original intent (LOL)

I forgot to add a link to my videos page,  here  , if you check out video #5 it’s a short Shelby TV segment on this paper type application on a small stool.
