Ten Projects, Day Five – Revised Cowhide Chairs – MOOOOO!

This projects relates to a few pieces I painted in the post – an Oak Thomasville Dining Set.

The pieces?   Chairs.   Original finish – Golden Oak.   Then, several years ago, I painted them with Caromal Textured Basecoat Peppercorn – simple distressed black.

When I brought the set to the store to sell, the idea was to use a neutral white – I went with APC’s Navajo White.    We painted several of the chairs white, and I painted the fabric seats as  well, using  APC Lincoln’s Hat mixed with APC Wild Horses.  When the seats dried,  I stenciled each pad with an accompanying number.

In the mean time,  I was working on the table finish, and I loved where it was going but I didnt like the chairs with the table – the white was too stark, so we re-painted them with a mix of American Paint Lincoln’s Hat and the APC wild Horses.  When it dried , I sanded and sealed with APC Topcoat mixed with Copper Mica

I had them in the showroom, around the dining table, but they were boring, and I didn’t like how they felt with the table…

I took one of the chairs back to the workroom and went to town with my power mouse sander, giving the chair a really good buzz…  after that I took APC’s Vintage Dark Wax, cut it with some of their Clear Wax, and gave each chair a light wiping to add an antiquing to the white.

Remember, the chairs HAD  been previously Topcoated, so they had a harder, more durable coating to begin with.  The purposed of the wax was to easily add that glazed/aged effect, and it offered the finish back an even sheen –

NOW I LOVE THEM!

They flow with the table finish much better, which is more rustic –caromal colours, american paint company, cow hide paint rustic paint finish, painted fabric, shop.fabfinisher.com fabulous finishes, metro detroit, coupon code PattyH

I call them my cow chairs because they remind me of cowhide.  I love the finish with the seat pad too –

Using Caromal Colours Chipping Creme… Primitive Barnworn Look

Kristie emailed me about Caromal Colours finishes, and using their Chipping Creme between two colors of their Textured Basecoat paints.

I have a question- do you have to use the chipping creme over the entire piece or can you use it where you would like the most distressing to occur (handles, etc)?

She wants to use these paints on her light oak kitchen cabinets and the primitive country look is her goal.

You can check this post out  – Painting Primitively Rustic – where I explain the play by play using Caromal’s paints and the purpose of Chipping  Creme.

I replied,

You can  ‘place’ the chipping crème to save time/money  but REMEMBER where you put it (because you’ll not see it once its covered)  and if you do it in a number of spots be careful NOT to have it end up looking forced, or unnatural…

An example of this is my old cabinets, where I started with TB (textured basecoat) Chocolate as my first layer, then brushed chipping creme only on the edges of the cabinets, then brushed TB Cobblestone over everything. When it dried I sanded to reveal the brown underneath, but I focused ONLY on the edges –  I didn’t want it too textural or primitive looking.

If your goal is to create an allover barnworn look,  quite primitive, quite distressed,  like these

then I HIGHLY recommend using the Chipping Creme over your WHOLE first coat of paint, as  it is intended – this way when it comes time to sand,  your ‘reveal’ will be unplanned and nautral looking.   Let the Chipping Creme do the work.

You can get a similiar look by STARTING with a layer of the Caromal Textured Basecoat paint, but instead of using chipping creme before applying their next color you can go over that first layer of texture with one of our chalk/clay/mineral paints.   These do NOT require a layer of chipping creme as a barrier.

Like this chair – the first layer was TB Chocolate and the second layer was CeCe Caldwell Simply White

Love it – that’s the finish I want for my kitchen table/chairs…

Round Side Table Redo – Painted Primitively Rustic with Chipping Creme

This little side table looked rustic to me, so I chose a barn worn finish to compliment it’s style.

  • First coat Caromal Colours Textured BasecoatPaprika, brushed on

DSC_0467

  • Let Paprika dry.
  • Apply stencil using Caromal’s Textured Basecoat Peppercorn.   I use tools from my faux biz but you can get the same effect using a credit card as a scraper.

DSC_0496b

  • Let stencil dry.
  • Brush layer of Caromal Chipping Creme over the whole piece.

Caromal Colour paints have great stay-put power – when you layer them they stick together too well –  the Chipping Creme coat  lets you distress/reveal back to the under color with ease.  Here you can see the chipping creme drying,  it brushes on creamy and dries clear-

DSC_0496

  • Let Chipping Creme Dry.
  • Brush on one layer Reclaim Pebble
  • Let Pebble dry.
  • When dry,  sand where you’d like to distress back to your under color
  • Lastly, brush on Toner and softly wipe off.  The Toner richens up your paint color

Pretty, don’t you think?

DSC_0513

I’ll have folks ask if they can use Chipping Creme with the CeCe paints.   You don’t need them when you layer the chalk/clay paints.  Until the CeCe paint is sealed it will sand off (or wet wipe off)  and reveal the under color on its own.   Even if  I layer Textured Basecoats and the CeCe Caldwell I do NOT use the Chipping Creme. Like this kind of finish
