Back From the Land of StickYourHeadInAHole

Gads, I don’t even want to look at the date of my last post – I get it, I’m way overdue.  What can I say?

Life gets in the way sometimes.

So without further ado,  lets share some projects!

I didn’t manage a picture at the very start, but this desk had a typical wood stained, varnished finish on top.  I used the Citristrip stuff to clean off the first layer.   Then I grabbed Caromal’s Textured Basecoats, in the Putty color –

painted_desk_black_apc_chalk_texture_wax_fabfinisher-6and brushed a thin coat on the base-

While the base was drying, I got out the American Paint Company all natural Antiquing Wax, in a pretinted ‘dark’ color, and scrubbed that on the rawer wood –

This is my favorite wax, by far,  over painted finishes, but I hadn’t really used it in this manner –  O M G…….

How beautiful is that wood turning?   Just scrub it on,  and I mean SCRUB –  don’t daintily paint it on, because you’ll waste a bunch, good for me cuz you’ll come back to buy more, but that’s silly, and wasteful – scrub it on – I prefer a natural bristle brush to get it deep and gritty,  and get your whole surface covered.  Let it seep in for a couple minutes, then wipe off with a soft cloth.

You NEED to wipe that excess off, or your surface will forever feel sticky.  Once the excess is off, let your surface dry out for a few hours, then buff it with another soft cloth.     So easy, and feels amazing.

When the Putty was dry, I took the middle drawer, and a stencil, and the Putty, and stenciled a thicker relief stencil.  No photo, but you can see the stencil in the picture below where I brushed APC Cannonball over the Putty and stencil, let it dry, then sanded to reveal the Putty texture and relief –

I finished covering the base with American Paint Cannonball (you can thin it a little to get it to glide even better)

The APC Chalk/Clay paints dry pretty fast,  once the black was dry I used a 180 sandpaper and gave the whole surface a light sanding .  Twofold,  the sanding breaks through the top color, revealing the dimensional texture below, and it also gives the painted surface a nice soft feel.

I used that same American Paint Vintage Dark Wax, to seal of the paint finish, and buffed it to a pretty sheen when it was dry.

I cleaned and refinished the hardware using the same paints, a sealer, and a few Swarovski crystals, and added some stenciling inside the drawers –

Painted Purple Ombre Vintage Cabinet In Progress –

I acquired these cupboards several years ago, at my first store location

The one on the right was my favorite – I loved

Even with her flaws –  the glass was missing – she was my kinda piece. I pulled her out last year, and painted her with American Paint Company Crushed Tea, and she sold soon after …

The cabinet on the left I always referred to as the

Finally,  a year since She was painted, I pulled Him out of the furniture heap…

purple-ombre-american-paint-fabfinisherI didn’t get very far that first day, and no free time was to be had in the week that  followed…

He waited… patiently.

Today, after the store closed,  when I should have been settling the books, I felt the urge to grab a brush and P A  I  N   T…

I started with a dark base of purple –  if you live local to our store, and are interested, pop in and we can show you the color/s we used for the base.  Otherwise, no sense mentioning, because at this time I’m not allowed to offer it for sale to my customers online.   Hopefully in the near future,  this hiccup can be remedied and we can share our excitement about colors that we like to use, AND, offer the paint color for purchase as well…

Over that dark purp base, I switched to American Paint Company paints, my go-to paints for blending and creating finishes that you’d class artsy fartsy-

APC colors Cannonball, Shining Seas, Bordello, First Lady, Chenille Beadspread, Uncle Sam…

AMERICAN-PAINT-CHALK-CLAYStill have a ways to go – but  I’ll be sure to share the completed cabinet.

Have a blessed week!

A Little Chest Transformed- Chalk Clay Mineral – BLACK, try APC Cannonball

“How can I make it original??

A few weeks ago I’d picked up some decorative scrapbook papers thinking  I could incorporate them in my finishing  – this piece was the perfect opportunity.

A  black and white damask would be perfect for the front drawer,  and these two new dainty wire pulls were perfect accents.  The rest of the piece would go black-

Modge podged…

I took a scrolly harlequin stencil and stenciled OVER the drawer paper with a stone plaster, just to give it a little dimension. Over that use American Paint Company Cannonball- I wanted it to tie in to the rest of the piece, and didn’t want it to take away from the pretty damask.  It’s very subtle and almost un-noticable, but then when you aren’t looking you notice it.

I added a few swarovski crystals to the wire knobs 🙂

Just right!

I had so much fun painting that I didn’t want to stop – painted inside,  painted outside, painted behind….

Buffed up so easily, I used just a dry cloth…

Didn’t even notice, but the border of this sign looks like the drawer paper!
