Kicking It Up A Huge Notch, With Cottage Paint

I wasn’t going to post our recent happenings with Cottage Paint until our new online store was launched,  after all, why share and boast, if you can’t spread the joy?

We are ready to test launch Wednesday, and this will be a category –

COTTAGE-PAINT-CATEGORY-SHOP-FABFINISHER

We’ve updated our selection of brushes, with great price points,  even brought on the velour roller we like to use when we roll our topcoats

BRUSHES-TOOLS-CHALK-CLAY-PAINTS-SHOP-FABFINISHER

Finally,  FINALLY,  the large assortment of 11×17 papers that we carry in our Shelby Township store will be available to order

AGED-PAPERS-SHOP-FABFINISHER

I knew this was going to be a huge task,  even with real, professional webmasters at the helm.  Taking our existing  shopping cart, years of blogging,  photos etc –  and creating one user friendly site that’s easy to maneuver, with interactive posts and products, up to date workshop calendars, registration online…

The problem is,  I want everything just right, and we’ve only started…  The shopping cart portion is ready to test, we haven’t even started transitioning the blog posts over.

It’s unrealistic to expect PERFECT  …  there are going to be bumps and glitches… but only one way to find out – get it out there and start testing it.

By Wednesday, the Aged Paper category and Cottage Paints should be complete. If you peruse our site mid-week you’ll find it takes you to the new one,  and we’ll see what happens!

WHAT IS COTTAGE PAINT?

Cottage Paint, a clay-based paint that dries to a chalky matte finish and is velvety smooth to the touch.   Fabulous, quick and easy – and in line with the other products we love – no stripping, sanding or primer is needed.

I was introduced to Cottage Paint a couple years ago , right around the time my new store was opening,  but my hands were full  getting our customers well acquainted with our existing lines – Caromal Colours and American Paint Company.  I’ve always liked offering options, but I don’t want different versions of the SAME.   Does that make sense?

  • Caromal Colours has a paint like no other – the Textured Basecoats, my magical go-to paint.  Super durable.    Theres Reclaim,  the easiest paint to use,  super durable,  and Botanicals, a chalky flat matte finish, that will stay put once it dries.
  • American Paint Company  offers my customers an all natural, zero voc, chalk/clay/mineral based paint with many color options.  They offer an excellent Wax and a water-based Topcoat option (alternative to wax).  I love love love them both.

So what can Cottage Paint offer that sets it apart from our others?

  • The paint stays open longer than an all natural chalk/clay paint, which allows you to flow out your color,  work in short or longer strokes, but then have the ability to pull a long stroke back together so it lays down nice.
  • A smoother feel like the Botanicals, except Botanical is chalky flat when dry, and Cottage Paint is silky.
  • Most of the colors have excellent coverage on the first pass.
  • It is a smoother feel when it dries than brushed on APC, brushed on Reclaim or Textured Basecoats.
  • Once dry, you can take a damp rag and wipe it to distress or to reveal back to an under color.  I like this wet wiping.  Unlike the chalk paints that can wet wipe pretty quick, the Cottage Paint takes it’s time revealing,  which means more control.  I feel it looks more authentic as well.
  • It doesn’t need a heavier sanding to remove brush strokes/etc – a quick burnishing with a 400-500 grit paper gives it a great soft feel.
  • The paint finish will dry and harden to an acceptable furniture finish, without the addition of a topcoat.   If you desire increased durability, you can topcoat with your favorite topcoat.
  • You can buff your paint, once dry, to a lovely low luster using a soft rag,  or use the wax drill brush tool and really shine it up.

  • It has an easy to use Crackle Medium that brushes on, dries naturally, THEN you brush your top color on.   The crackle effect is soft and subtle – I like it.

  • You can glaze over the Cottage Paint, the same day, and it works fine.   You can do this with Textured Basecoats as well.  Reclaim needs to sit a few days before glazing,  I don’t glaze Botanical the same day as it wants to pull up the paint,  and I don’t glaze APC finishes without first applying a layer of Topcoat Finish.

  • Waxing is effortless over a Cottage Paint finish –  it doesnt have to soak in like it does the chalky paints. Think of it more as a polishing, and I love how Mica Wax applies evenly, not blotchy

Cottage Paint Bold Black with Brass Mica Wax and Black Wax. I jazzed up the top with texture, metallics, and tinted waxes.

  •  Best of all, I love our colors.  While Cottage Paint, a Canadian-based line,  offers alot of pre-tinted colors,  I wanted to define our own color palette.   What our customers like (more versions of neutrals) , what we needed (a white white with great coverage),  what we were lacking (a Pottery Barn blue, a wine), what I was lacking (KING PURPLE!!!)  🙂

Taste of My Week, A Camera Trail…

Last night, out with friends, I noticed my girlfriend had over 2500 images on her Iphone.  Think about that,  2500 pictures!   Every day we have customers pulling out their phones or Ipads,   showing us a project they completed using our products

Often, they can’t find the photo they want to show us – they swipe, and swipe, and swipe through all these tiny images – a rewind into their past

That’s how I felt this weekend, loading up my camera SD card – it was a pictorial rewind of my week

We got our display of new bath bombs set up

fabulous-finishes-studio-inspiration-painted-furniture-workshops-metro-detroit-diy-paints-shop-online0238

I rolled this piece out to the floor

Created some accessories…

fabulous-finishes-studio-inspiration-painted-furniture-workshops-metro-detroit-diy-paints-shop-online0217

I really liked the color of this metal container – it was black to start with and I drybrushed several greens and neutrals over it – might have to try that on something bigger…

DSC_1495 [1600x1200]

A green glossy ceramic pot (I changed the finish to a white and grey glazed crackle)  in need of a fresh plant that I didn’t have (nor want, because anything alive won’t last around me)…  how do you stage it?   I found that this container fit it just right –  it’s priced separately…

fabulous-finishes-studio-inspiration-painted-furniture-workshops-metro-detroit-diy-paints-shop-online0218

Rolled this one out to the floor as well  – I used Caromal Colours Reclaim Offwhite, brushed on in thin layers, and then glazed it.  I started with Caromal’s Black Brown Glaze and a custom mix of a green glaze – didn’t like that, so I added in Molasses glaze and some Toner and got rid of the green glaze – that was better, but still not quite right, so I waxed it with a little APC Dark Wax and a little APC Clear Wax mixed with black pigment.   Waxing over Reclaim is much more subtle – think of it like polishing a piece of furniture that’s already been sealed –

fabulous-finishes-studio-inspiration-painted-furniture-workshops-metro-detroit-diy-paints-shop-online0244

The inside was backed with our lovely aged Botanical papers (coming to our online shopping cart soon!)

fabulous-finishes-studio-inspiration-painted-furniture-workshops-metro-detroit-diy-paints-shop-online0243

The insides of the upper and lower cabinets and drawers were stained to bring them back to life, but the sides of the drawers got a splash of color – actually   I used three of our new Cottage Paint colors   – Groovy Green, Killer Khaki and Trendy Truffle (coming to our online shopping cart soon!), and stenciled randomly, using black and white stencil creme

fabulous-finishes-studio-inspiration-painted-furniture-workshops-metro-detroit-diy-paints-shop-online0242

I took another round of store photos, to send to our ad agent –

We run an ad in a magazine mailer every couple months, and I like to change out a few of the photos, to keep it fresh and engaging.  Sometimes a close up works,

fabulous-finishes-studio-inspiration-painted-furniture-workshops-metro-detroit-diy-paints-shop-online0223

but I  like the pictures that are on overload-

Put these out

fabulous-finishes-studio-inspiration-painted-furniture-workshops-metro-detroit-diy-paints-shop-online0231

I finally priced a number of pieces that I finished recently.  I hate this part and wish it was easier for me.   It depends on the quality of the piece, the condition, the size, the depth of the finish- how many layers,  how detailed , the techniques applied…

and if its one of my favorites, then it’s even harder to put a number to.  Like this one – I want to keep but have no where to put it….

fabulous-finishes-studio-inspiration-painted-furniture-workshops-metro-detroit-diy-paints-shop-online0222

I took pictures of some grey paints that we have, for one of my customers  from afar.  She emailed me with questions, and it was easier for me to shoot her back visuals –

fabulous-finishes-studio-inspiration-painted-furniture-workshops-metro-detroit-diy-paints-shop-online0220

I painted this oak door panel with Cottage Paint Killer Khaki and Bold Black.  The top half I glazed with Black Glaze, the bottom was the black crackled over the khaki.  For a shimmer I added APC wax with Brass Mica (coming soon to our online store).

I loved the bottom combination and wanted to try it on something bigger…

So i dug out this chest, actually acquired when I was back at my first store, over two years ago!   I’ll keep track of the progress…

Saturday morning started with a 9am Creating Art with Botanical Papers Workshop.  We start with a glass framed piece of art, and using our paints and finishes, create a new work of art 🙂

Out of hundreds of aged papers, two of our peeps chose the same one!  I love how they turned out…

Finally painting the phone booth I acquired from an estate sale last summer… Originally red, we’re taking it blue

in honor of WHO?       I had no clue who Dr. Who was, but several suggested, after seeing the phone booth, that if we painted it  blue they would buy it…

Lastly,  these decorative resin/stone finals got dressed up with some new variegated leaf that I was trying out –

A Hutch Transformed With CeCe Caldwell Smoky Mountain Gray…

Back when I was a kid,  we took a trip to the Smoky Mountains… there is a photo similar to this one, except we’re posing in front of the fence like tourons…

and you thought I was pulling your  leg 🙂   That’s me in the middle smiling at my brother

Little did I know, years later I’d be painting a piece of furniture in a color named Smoky Mountain Gray

I started with this lovely gem – such a pretty piece  to paint, and in excellent condition

The drawers were lined with Detroit Newspapers from 1979.  Good for the future owner because the inside drawers are like new

My inspiration?   a picture frame finish that I created for my mom

I started with a base of Reclaim Licorice black

added glue in areas, as I went along, and painted over it all with the CeCe Caldwell Smoky Mountain

This paint is easy to brush out, thick but creamy and levels out just enough so you’re not left with heavy brushy marks…  and it goes far.  One coat covered this piece and I only used not even 1/3 of the can

After a very light sand I aged and sealed it with a Liberon Medium Oak Wax

and for an extra custom punch, I gave the top an animal hide texture in a warm silver metallic

My new buddy John, owner at Profaux, told me to sell it for no less than $1500…

and he said I should sign it.  After all,  it’s one of a kind.  Custom…

I haven’t signed it.  Yet.

For Sale  $899

A Mirror Frame Refinish Is Finished

Say THAT three times!

Last week I took to task refinishing my powder room hardware.  One thing led to another and I found myself refinishing the mirror as well –

I decided to crackle it and paint it black (you can follow the details here)-

but the end result was too stark, and I felt it needed something more –

One luxury (or curse, sometimes) of being a decorative painter is having SHELVES of wonderful products at hand to use in our journey to the ‘just right’ finish.

After the black paint crackled, I added more crackle size, in areas, and then brushed on some Antique Parchment Lusterstone.  Over that I added a little blackish brown glaze.  It is now very crusty and aged looking-

and a much better fit for my bathroom –

Now I REALLY need to Aurastone that marbelite counter – in black and gold and…..

One thing leads to another….
