A layered, chippy finish can be obtained a number of ways – here the texture on the first layer is Textured Basecoat Peppercorn, but instead of ‘chipping creme’ and then another Textured Basecoat  she used American Paint Co’s Fireworks Red, one coat painted on just enough to cover.  When it dries you can sand with a 150 grit to get thru to the textured base, and you can damp rag it to reveal as well.

I think APC Dark Wax completed this finish-

My Indigo Painted Mirror – Caromal Colours Quick And Easy Peasy!

Often, when I find dressers or chests, they come with a mirror.  Sometimes I’ll finish them as a set, other times I’ll only paint the dresser.

See the mirror below, on the left?

shop online, american paint company, caromal colours, reclaim, textured basecoat, chalk paint, clay mineral, fabulous finishes, shop.fabfinisher.com, coupon code PattyH, patty henning, metro detroit, paint workshops, painted furniture

I painted it to match it’s accompanying dresser, using Reclaim Pebble over  Caromal Textured Basecoat Paprika

The chest sold, but the mirror didn’t float anyone’s boat.

Out of the blue (the INDIGO BLUE) I decided to repaint it.  I basecoated it Caromal Colours Textured Basecoat Blueberry

http://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&docid=oUXQvH3E79fi6M&tbnid=ZGH4E_DhyyumuM:&ved=0CAUQjRw&url=http%3A%2F%2Ffabulousfinishes.wordpress.com%2Fcategory%2Fcaromal-colours-diy%2Fcaromal-colour-reclaim%2F&ei=9tJ2U62NB8uisASJxoDYBw&bvm=bv.66917471,d.aWw&psig=AFQjCNGumyWt81kN2GFJwWvLJQPIojIdyw&ust=1400382576823842

I brushed on a coat over the whole mirror, and let it dry.   What I like about Caromal’s  Textured Basecoat is that it stays put.   What do I mean?  The goal is to paint a top color, white, and then sand back to reveal the blue.  I  WANT to see the blue,  but I DONT want to see that Pebble or Paprika color peeking through the top color white.    With the textured basecoats, when I sand through my top color and get to ‘it’, the blue,  I’ll have a  little bit of time before I sand through the blue and get to the original color – aka Pebble.

shop online, american paint company, caromal colours, reclaim, textured basecoat, chalk paint, clay mineral, fabulous finishes, shop.fabfinisher.com, coupon code PattyH, patty henning, metro detroit, paint workshops, painted furniture

Over this dried Blueberry  I brushed on a thinner coat of Caromal’s sister paint, Reclaim in Bright White.   Reclaim is generally used  as a roll on paint to apply in an all over even coating, that dries back to a more even finish AND has it’s own sealer built in,  but you can get artsy fartsy with it too.

shop online, american paint company, caromal colours, reclaim, textured basecoat, chalk paint, clay mineral, fabulous finishes, shop.fabfinisher.com, coupon code PattyH, patty henning, metro detroit, paint workshops, painted furniture

Now pay attention –   the general rule  with Caromal Colours paints is,    if you layer several colors of Caromal paint – like textured basecoat over textured basecoat,  or Reclaim over Textured Basecoat,  then you’ll want to use their Chipping  Creme in between those colors.  Think  OREO COOKIE.   Caromal paint color #1,  then creme in the middle, then Caromal paint color #2 on the other side.

chipping creme

Chipping Creme helps prevent the bonding of color one onto color two.  Remember, Caromal’s paints are different than the popular chalk type paints  on the market – those paints can be layered and sanded off each other effortlessly – or even wiped off each other with a wet rag –  but Caromal’s paints are created to STAY put when they dry WITHOUT relying on a sealer or topcoat.

shop online, american paint company, caromal colours, reclaim, textured basecoat, chalk paint, clay mineral, fabulous finishes, shop.fabfinisher.com, coupon code PattyH, patty henning, metro detroit, paint workshops, painted furniture

Now, if you notice above,  I did NOT apply a layer of Chipping Creme between my Textured Basecoat Blueberry and Reclaim Bright White…..     ?????

Ok, this is off the record,  and PAY ATTENTION because this is one of those things where you try to cheat the system, and sometimes it works, other times it doesn’t….

if you brush this Caromal Reclaim paint directly over Caromal’s Textured Basecoat,  without that Chipping Creme slip coat,  you CAN get the Reclaim to sand off the Textured Basecoat below, easy enough,   BUT you need to do it AS SOON AS IT DRIES…

shop online, american paint company, caromal colours, reclaim, textured basecoat, chalk paint, clay mineral, fabulous finishes, shop.fabfinisher.com, coupon code PattyH, patty henning, metro detroit, paint workshops, painted furniture

I used a blow dryer,   dried my white and then whipped out my 150 grit sand paper and gave it a whooosh whoooosh sanding –

shop online, american paint company, caromal colours, reclaim, textured basecoat, chalk paint, clay mineral, fabulous finishes, shop.fabfinisher.com, coupon code PattyH, patty henning, metro detroit, paint workshops, painted furniture

It worked awesomely great,  AND even better,  barely any dust kicked up when I sanded-  that’s because the Reclaim’s  got that sealer built in,  it’s not a chalky porous kind of paint

shop online, american paint company, caromal colours, reclaim, textured basecoat, chalk paint, clay mineral, fabulous finishes, shop.fabfinisher.com, coupon code PattyH, patty henning, metro detroit, paint workshops, painted furniture

shop online, american paint company, caromal colours, reclaim, textured basecoat, chalk paint, clay mineral, fabulous finishes, shop.fabfinisher.com, coupon code PattyH, patty henning, metro detroit, paint workshops, painted furniture

Even better still,   when I got to the look/color I desired, I was done –  no need to seal – the Reclaim, having the sealer in it, leaves a satin sheen – now sanding it will scuff it up some, but used this way (on the mirror) it doesn’t look scuffed up at all –

shop online, american paint company, caromal colours, reclaim, textured basecoat, chalk paint, clay mineral, fabulous finishes, shop.fabfinisher.com, coupon code PattyH, patty henning, metro detroit, paint workshops, painted furniture

Now remember,  if you layer their colors, and ARENT going to be watching it dry so you can sand, then make sure you use the Chipping Creme in between.

DSC_5885

We don’t glaze the chalk/clay/mineral paints the night of workshop – I prefer getting a coat of sealer on the paint (which we DO do in class), and then waiting until the piece is good and dry, then applying the glaze…   this way gives you way more control then trying to glaze over raw chalk/clay paint.

And remember,  NO GLAZING over wax…

A Paint Week Full Of Do-Over Tops…

It actually started LAST week with this piece…

DSC_6172

the plan was to paint it American Paint Company Smoke Signal with a Pewter Mica tinted wax – I wanted to  and see how the finish compared to a metallic silver finish I like to do using metallic paints ( I’ll be sharing this lovely piece next!)

DSC_4360

So the Smoke Signal went on, I added a grain sack stripe to the side panels using a darker gray – APC Freedom Road + APC Plymouth Rock.  It was looking okey wet, but when it dried the stencil looked gray BLUE.

I wasn’t 100% sold, but the bigger problem was the top.  I had started with a thin layer of several Caromal Colours textured paints, and then used staining glazes to create a wood looking top.    All was well, until I noticed a couple little nibs of something sticking up. Tiny nibs.  I should have let them be… but I didn’t.  I sanded them lightly, and darn if they didn’t turn into putty colored flat nibs (putty was one of the base colors I’d used).

CRAP!  And no, I didn’t take pictures.  Usually when something like this happens, its all of a sudden,  hands are dirty, and you throw yourself right into ‘fixing’ it, or trying to fix it.

DSC_6417

I tried to lightly sand, and re-apply some light texture base, etc etc – and it didn’t work – you could see those spots.  So I layered something else – and when it dried you  could STILL see those spots…     ARGGGH!!!!

Why didn’t I leave it alone to begin with?

Let’s just say I played a few more times, not satisfied, whereby I sanded every last bit off and started over.

It’s got to be just right, you know?     This time I changed up the base and used some blue gray in it.  Figured it might help tie in with those stenciled sides…

DSC_6460

As you can see,  the new top color didn’t make me 100% love the sides, so I changed those too –   I could envision a panel crackled , the under color being the darker brown color, and then Smoke Signal over top –

DSC_6456

The crackle is still drying here, I painted over glue to achieve that.  Once everything dries, I’ll wax the rest of the piece and seal the top…

DSC_6454

I had a vision for this table too –

DSC_5396a

I wanted to use CeCe Vintage White OVER one of my favorite layering colors, CeCe Mesa Sunset –  and finish it with a black tinted wax.   I did a similar finish last year and liked how it turned out –  with an embedded black stencil on the top

DSC_5831

With this top square, I didn’t like the medallion stencil idea, so I chose an allover pattern and stenciled it with Caromal Textured basecoat peppercorn to create an embedded design –

DSC_6337

Often, I’ll get an idea in my head HOW I want a piece to look – but sometimes it doesn’t work like I thought..   This was one of those pieces –    when I had it all painted I knew it wouldn’t be staying that way for long…

Y A W N …..      the top needed to pop on this –

DSC_6339

I dragged it back to the workroom, after only a few hours on the floor 🙂 , and played around on the top, trying to figure out what would make it complete…

After a couple attempts, I was pleased with my results –  this top looks AND feels just like a piece of polished, aged copper

DSC_6402

Now I like it!

DSC_6481

DSC_6477

This table had great legs – I love painting Jacobean pieces, and my friend gave me a lead on this pretty table sitting solo at our local Salvation Army.  It needed a little TLC but what pretty detail…

IMG_2042

The base was painted CeCe Caldwell Simply White and sealed with Beautiful Satin Finish topcoat.  The top was pretty but worn.  I decided to sand it back a little,  and restain it.     DSC_6166

Oh,  say maybe 5 attempts later,  I might have it where I want it…  it’s still drying…

DSC_6467

Hopefully, it will dry just how I want it, and I can move on to top coating…

DSC_6468

Still about TOPS, but not about RE doing them,  I finished these chairs last week – I didn’t paint the red, that was the previous finish – I just sanded them back, and gave them a black wash to play off the red –

DSC_6173

then added them to this table I finished a while back using Caromal Colours textured basecoats –   what a nice pairing!

DSC_6227

And this was another TOP (and base) I just completed – the basecoat is Caromal Colours textured base paprika, then chipping creme, then Reclaim Pebble, which is like a beige/gray…   sanded back and then glazed with black and brown glaze

Love it.  Reclaim is adding FOUR new colors to its palette,  Graphite, Nantucket Blue, Poppy Red and a Linen.  Look for those in store next month –
