We Love When Our Customers Share Their Projects!

It’s always fun to see what our customers are doing, how they tackle projects with our products…

Here are some recent pictures-
This kitchen was shared last time around, but the counters and a few other pretties weren’t complete. The proud owner shared a more recent photo of her updated kitchen – the before

and the after,  cabinets painted and glazed by the homeowners themselves

A pair of fun chairs using several of our chalk and clay paints by American Paint Company.  Using our Fish Fossil Stencil with our Stone Plaster adds a great raised design-

Dawn visited her father in Florida, and his several pieces of oak furniture that no longer worked for him.  He wanted a lighter, weathered wood feel, and chose a barnworn finish on the table, and a softer color on the rest.

They used Textured Basecoat colors Putty and Wisteria with our Molasses Glaze.  The remaining pieces were painted with our Cottage Paint Wonder White, and our Less Intense Molasses Glaze.

One of our regular customers online, Katherine from Arkansas, shared this headboard project she completed:

Here’s a before and after – The first is the stripped raw wood with a watered down Reclaim Pebble. You can see half of the head board is done.

The second photo is after the Caromal Colours Toner was brushed on in in direction of the wood grain but not wiped back.  I just brushed until it no longer had streaks.   Toner worked beautifully! Over the weekend I tried different glazes and said to myself ” it just doesn’t have enough bite”  Then I remembered you saying how toner has a great bite to it! Thanks so much! It’s exactly the look I was going for.

Shannon painted this cabinet using a custom teal Cottage Paint color we tinted for her.   This is a great way to accommodate our customers when they have a specific color in mind they they can’t find with our current line of paints.   She used some of our American Paint colors that she had left over from other projects to paint and stencil the inside –

This hope chest started its transformation in one of our Paint a Piece Workshops.  Our customer brought in the chest, minus the top (otherwise the piece would have been too large to complete) and painted it with our Cottage Paint custom color Vanilla.  Over that she used our American Paint Dark Vintage Wax to add that lovely antiquing effect, and a soft sheen and feel as well.

It’s a beautiful chest – she loved it for years in its darker form, but it was time for a lighter version.  I love that she can still appreciate this piece that holds meaning to her.

Blend Colors of Grey Gray – Reclaim and Cottage Paint

I have been working on uploading photos to our store items online,  and wanted to share them here as well.   Seeing colors stacked next to each other is helpful when deciding color.

These pictures portray various shades of GREY that we offer,  4 boards using Reclaim Paint and 2 boards  Cottage Paint

fabulous_finishes_reclaim_paint_custom_colors_cottage_paint_gray-grey (1)

It’s obvious,Licorice  a stocked Reclaim color, is BLACK not GREY.  I included it as a reference for the other boards.  Pewter is a stocked Reclaim color as well

fabulous_finishes_reclaim_paint_custom_colors_cottage_paint_gray-grey (2)

Shadow and Lead are two of our Cottage Paint colors that we custom tint –

fabulous_finishes_reclaim_paint_custom_colors_cottage_paint_gray-grey (4)

and these last couple boards we call ‘Reclaim Blends‘  – colors we’ve concocted by blending together several or more Reclaim colors, using noted ratios –

We offer a great selection of glaze colors,  and recently added two NEW glaze colors – a rich WALNUT,  and my favorite, a soft UMBER, the perfect neutral.   I’ll share those pictures next time.   Happy Painting!

An Exciting Week, Live in the D…

This past week I was honored to make an appearance on Channel 4’s morning show  Live in the D, for their March Madness Makeover on updating furniture.

liveinthed_wdiv_march_makeover

Michelle Oliver, a video reporter from WDIV, visited our store looking for an easy way to makeover her dresser.  She taped some of her visit,  choosing a paint color and some how to tips.

wdiv_liveinthed_fabulous_finishes_studio

and went home with everything she needed for her makeover project.   She wanted her dresser painted a soft white, but was interested in dressing up the top, maybe even adding a stencil ….

On the live show we demonstrated how to add a foil element to her dresser top, and adding extra detail with stencils.

liveinthed_fabfinishes_furniture_makeover

I wish we could have had a whole hour to discuss ways to dress up a simple paint finish –  it’s what drives my creativity –

~ the art of embellishing your piece ~

Of course, a simple paint finish is classic,  like this bedroom

and these curios that my client wanted black

(before) Right Cabinet, (after) using Reclaim Licorice

(before) Right Cabinet, (after) using Reclaim Licorice

“Just” paint,  maybe layering colors, and a little sanding/wiping to reveal is another easy makeover,  like this gorgeous Florentina  bed from Habersham Home

habersham_bed

or this fun piece

Side table painted in several layered colors APC Chalk & Clay paint, waxed

Side table painted in several layered colors APC Chalk & Clay paint, waxed

Maybe you paint a piece, and a month later you decide you could live with a little more pizazz… what then?

Applying a glaze would be an easy way to add dimension to your painted finish. Glazes can be applied over any non-waxed paint finish that isn’t flat or raw.   We offer many choices of glaze colors, both in store and online

glaze_colors_over_white

Using a thicker, textured paint like our Caromal Textured Basecoats as a first layer color, and then another paint/color over top will allow you to reveal back, easily, to a real cool worn look

fabulous_finishes_black_painted_finish_textured_layers

You could also add a thicker stencil, embedded between your color layers like I did on these back panels, using our Textured Plaster or Stone products

fabulous_finishes_painted_texture_finishes_thick_stencil

and on the front of this piece under a silver metallic finish…

fabulous_finishes_painted_silver_raised_plaster_panels

Jazz it up more with some Swarovski shimmer

fabulous_finishes_swarovskis_and_pearls_shop_online

we offer a great selection of Swarovski colors, both in crystals and pearls

fabulous_finishes_custom_relief_stencil_painted_cabinet

This piece had a lot of adds – the embedded plaster stencil design on the whole front, buried between American Paint Co. Chalk and Clay paint colors,  Swarovski Crystals, and our new Varigated Blue Gilding Leaf, on the top, accents and hardware

American Paint chalk and clay paints in various pink shades, each tier stenciled, shimmered with crystals, feet accented with silver leaf

One of my all time favorite pieces, silver finish with stencil accents

It’s hard for me NOT to add something somewhere….  it doesn’t always have to be the front and center focus, like this red secretary –  it can be subdued, tucked away off to the side like the silver vanity

fabulous_finishes_stenciling_detail_furniture_custom

Maybe a change to the top would work for your space – FOILS  are  fun

and there are many color pattern to choose from.  Michelle chose Woodhaven Gold for her dresser top, which we demonstrated on TV

fabulous_finishes_foil_transfers foil_transfer_samples_fabfinisher

Or foil just your hardware, or feet, or drawer fronts….

The Cottage Paint is lovely to paint with – glides nicely and far, and it’s easy to glaze the next day w/out sealing it up first.  We also like that we can tint any color we need!  The Truffle is a perfect brown for a rich brown top, and adding our Black Glaze over top takes it to a deeper level.

I need to take a minute, and share feelings in my gut that have been bothering me lately…

If you find these projects helpful,  if you find our blog posts informative and our videos instructive – maybe they give you that confidence boost to finally tackle a project,  then by all means, we really hope you can patron our business when it comes time to purchase your paints.

These blog posts over the years have taken HOURS of time to put together, our FREE to watch instructive videos take time and effort to create, this website is costly,  maintaining a storefront, staffed with awesome help that daily service our customers,  local AND on the phone, is costly.

These are all choices I make for my business… I do it with hopes that it builds a trust from you, and creates new business as a result.   To ALL of our customers, new and old, that patron our business, both local and online –  THANK YOU!!!    You are helping keep small businesses alive, and we value you.

I have known the owners of these paints for years – I love them like family…  for some reason they have decided that marketing these products through big box-online-presence stores like Amazon will be great for product line growth, with not much thought on HOW it will hurt their smaller retailers ( like us ) that have been with them for years, informing,  instructing, and teaching others about their paints.   They think offering it at these online stores will drive more business to us ,  however the REVERSE actually happens.

Painting  your cabinets isn’t an easy decision for people.  It’s a huge investment. They want to be well informed,  they want support along the way…. they’ll search online for any information they can find – blog posts like these for example.  Some will email questions, some will call with questions, and then they’ll pull the trigger to buy.

And they head to Amazon, and buy it there.  Why?  Because Amazon can offer free shipping – it’s what BIG-BOX-ONLINE-STORES do,  and it doesn’t cost them anything.

Our shipping rates are tight, and we actually refund back if we can on any excess shipping, but we can’t absorb the total cost for you.  But for the 10 or 15 bucks you might pay in shipping,  you will have personal support if you need it, and we KNOW these products.

So if you think saving on shipping is worth it, ask yourself this –

  • Does Amazon have great customer service?   Nope, good luck with that.
  • Do they have knowledgeable sales people that will talk to you on the phone, or respond to your email about specifics in color options or application?    There will be no personal support.  They don’t use it, or teach with it – their background is logistics and warehousing.

We are DONE fielding phone calls and emails from people asking questions about the paint process – some haven’t started yet, some are in process, some are done,   but when we ask for their sale #, so we can look up who they are, they tell us they didn’t get the products from us.

When you order your products from us, keep your sales receipt. If you ever need help, or have questions, simply call us or email us, and we will be here for you.  No questions asked – except for your sales number 🙂

Hi Patty,  A shiny brass chandelier before, I used Textured Basecoat Parchment and Toner. I smooshed and “tapped” Parchment all over.  Applied Toner heavy then dabbed with a paper towel to get the light and dark areas.  Thanks for your inspiration!!!!  Blessings,  Susie

Before, a lovely brass fixture, class and could stand the test of time, right?  Sure, unless you are changing the feel of a room, or your whole house – then you could either replace it with a new one, OR keep this one intact and give it a new look…

Fabulous!

Christina was updating her daughter’s bedroom when she came into our store.  She brought a sample of the new bedding with her, to see what color she could use to update the oak furniture, which included a LARGE wall unit and another dresser…

I wish she’d have shared a before photo – she hated the hardware, but they were unique in size, making it difficult to replace without costing a fortune.  I told her to go right over the hardware – let it blend right in with the pieces –

chris_oak_bedroom_wall_unit_painted_mocha

I know she used Reclaim, I just have to confirm if she used Mocha, or if she mixed two colors together – Mocha and ButterCreme– to get a softer brown (Mocha reclaim is a dark dark brown, like bakers chocolate).   We have a number of sample color boards in our store that we call BLENDS –  a mix of two, sometimes even three colors of Reclaim, in varying ratios – creating colors differet than the main deck – like these reclaim_paint_blended_colors

She also picked up some American Paint Company Coral Reef, and used that to paint this mirror

Christina was thrilled with the results, and her daughter loved her new bedroom!
