Ten Projects, Number Nine – A Textured Bronze Desk

More metallic, this one over Caromal Colours Peppercorn – a great textural basecoat.

No play by plays on this one, I was in get-it-done mode.

1)   Textured Basecoat Peppercorn (black),  brushed on (not stippled) .

2)  Brushed Metallic Bronze  over the whole thing.

3)  Let dry, and lightly sand to pop the black texture.

4) Brush on Black Glaze, softly wipe back.

I used the original hardware, based it with TB Peppercorn,  dry brushed with a silver metallic blend, added black glaze,  a topcoat and Swarovski crystals.

I really like when pieces are finished all the way around,  not many are, and this desk was.    I wished there was more detail on the back side, so I created it myself using a thicker plaster through a stencil, and dry brushed  it like the hardware

I dressed that up with a few crystals as well…

Ten Projects, Day Four – Heed the Bleed, Painting A Vintage Cabinet

We start with this cabinet –  an old, old black paint finish on the outside, and a dark mahogany stain on the inside.   I love vintage cabinets like this, ones you aren’t quite sure what they are supposed to be –  we figured an old record cabinet.

fabulous finishes studio, chalk clay paint, american paint company, caromal colours, reclaim, metro detroit, shop online shop.fabfinisher.com, coupon code PattyH, workshopI loved the curvy big front panel, and wanted to create something really cool on it –  I thought maybe a full blown crackle finish, like the front of this chest below –

fabulous finishes studio, chalk clay paint, american paint company, caromal colours, reclaim, metro detroit, shop online shop.fabfinisher.com, coupon code PattyH, workshop

It’s a crackle finish I learned when I was finishing walls, using Faux Effects crackling products, and tints.     The plan – to crackle  various earth tone shades of green over a silver base.

The metallic silver needed a solid base underneath, so I first started with a quick basecoat of   Reclaim Licorice – a perfect DARK black that not only bonds like cement but already has a sealer in it .  When dry,  I applied one coat of a metallic silver.

fabulous finishes studio, chalk clay paint, american paint company, caromal colours, reclaim, metro detroit, shop online shop.fabfinisher.com, coupon code PattyH, workshop

When I finally got around to crackling the door, I pulled out my Faux Effects Crackle mediums.  The sizing was a weird consistency when I opened it, and I had second thoughts about using it  – the crackle products dont have long shelf life –  but I was READY, right?   If I didn’t use it I’d have had to stop what I was doing, and order more online.  Bah-  I used it anyway, thinking it just was getting tired, and it still looked close enough to what it should…   I rolled on the sizing,  waited for it to set, and applied my various colorants mixed into another FE crackle medium, and then waited to see what would happen as it dried.

If you notice below, there is no trace of anything I did on the door panel.

As soon as it started drying I knew the sizing went wrong.  It didn’t do what it should, and instead looked like a big fluffy goopy mess.  I literally had to scrape and work it to get  it all off.  Some crunchies still remained, and by that point I was O V E R the ‘getting it all off’ thing, so I changed directions and decided, again, to make the door a focal point, but this  time I’d create an old, layered look,  using some plaster with my paints to give it a really old, textured feel …

I got out American Paint Company’s  Parchment, Tumbleweed, and Limoge, and brushed the three colors on, intermittently –

fabulous finishes studio, chalk clay paint, american paint company, caromal colours, reclaim, metro detroit, shop online shop.fabfinisher.com, coupon code PattyH, workshop

I added some Elmers Glue to crackle in a few places – you can see an area in the picture below.  Brushing on white glue and painting over it while its wet will create cracking as it dries-

Pretty quick after brushing on the paint, certain spots on the piece started to turn pink.   If you’ve been there you know – this PINK  is like a traffic light that suddenly starts to blink red –  it forces you to stop in your tracks and devise a new plan…

fabulous finishes studio, chalk clay paint, american paint company, caromal colours, reclaim, metro detroit, shop online shop.fabfinisher.com, coupon code PattyH, workshops, tannin bleed, all over stencil, perfect plaster

It was popping up in quite a few places.   I cleaned the piece before I started, but cleaning won’t stop the bleed from popping through.     Staining from the tannins in the wood is typically is caused by a combination of moisture and insufficient sealing.  Moisture (in this case, moisture from the paint or topcoat) can carry tannins contained in the wood through to the painted surface, and you’ll know it as  soon as it pops through –

fabulous finishes studio, chalk clay paint, american paint company, caromal colours, reclaim, metro detroit, shop online shop.fabfinisher.com, coupon code PattyH, workshops, tannin bleed, all over stencil, perfect plaster

I put that issue on hold, and instead mixed some stuff to apply to the front panel.  I used Caromal’s Perfect Plaster, a fun textured plaster that can build a stoney finish ,  some of the Reclaim Bright White, and some of the Reclaim Off White,  mixed them together, and rolled it onto the front panel door using a low nap WHIZ roller.

fabulous finishes studio, chalk clay paint, american paint company, caromal colours, reclaim, metro detroit, shop online shop.fabfinisher.com, coupon code PattyH, workshops, tannin bleed, all over stencil, perfect plaster

When that dried, I appled one more layer of the plaster mix, but this time I  bladed (scraped) it on over the first rolled layer –

One foot to go –

fabulous finishes studio, chalk clay paint, american paint company, caromal colours, reclaim, metro detroit, shop online shop.fabfinisher.com, coupon code PattyH, workshops, tannin bleed, all over stencil, perfect plaster

I gave the front a light sanding, paying more attention to the bleed areas, and sanding those a little more. I tell my customers, if you’re painting an old piece and you get bleed, if you can find a way to play off it, you will save yourself loads of time and effort. Otherwise, you’d just stop the painting, let the piece dry well, and then begin several rounds of shellac’ing  or kilz’ing, to tame the pink beast.

I knew my ‘focal front’ needed just a little bit more, so I  grabbed an old stencil, and applied it to the front of the cabinet, using Caromal Colours Toner –

When that was dry I got out a little rougher grit paper ( 150) and sanded the front surface.  This gave it a nice worn feel.  I even sanded a few areas down to the original dark stained finish, and that worked.

I sanded the top and sides, to knock out any sloppy marks, and sealed it with American Paint’s Dark Vintage Wax cut with some APC Clear Vintage Wax

I cleaned up the handle and reused it. The inside looked good, except for the back panel.  It was ugly.

I removed it, and replaced it with a cutting of primed bead board, and we painted it Reclaim Off White.

Ten Projects, Day Two – Painting My Habersham Sideboy

I acquired this piece awhile back, from an estate sale –

DSC_5014

I didn’t even pay attention to the name plaque on the inside,   Habersham.

Wow,  I was a new owner of a Habersham piece!   Habersham was not in my budget, but it never stopped me from pining over their craftsmanship.  When I saw the name inside the cabinet I was a bit surprised-  it was a horrible looking finish, kindof a lighter greenish glaze over a light base. The inside was a light green as well.   It definitely would be a whole new piece once painted…

It got a coat of American Paint Company Wild Horses, an all natural Chalk and Clay based paint,  and then it sat for a long time… DSC_3346coupon code PattyH

until I got tired of it being in the way.  I decided on Sackcloth, a darker burlap, and Plymouth Rock, a light grey neutral.

DSC_3348

When I have an idea in my head, I need to see it first, all the way to the end, so I painted out one door, applying both colors at the same time-

DSC_3349

and let it dry.

DSC_3351

I lightly sanded the  finish, bringing up little hints of the under color…

DSC_3353

and then decided on wax to seal the paint.  I used  APC Dark Wax and mixed up some Pewter Wax (APC Clear Wax and Pewter Mica)

DSC_3352

Scrubbing it  on…

DSC_3358

Softly wipe the excess, otherwise you’ll have a tackier finish.

DSC_3361

DSC_3366

I like it…

DSC_3370

As it dries, it’s in limbo.  It’s that short window of time where I have a right, as the creator, to change my mind and add/change it 🙂

I wasn’t sold – I didn’t just want it to be another distressed paint finish …

DSC_3385

I sanded back that section, repainted it brown, and when it dried I stenciled a plaster on each door panel .

DSC_3386

I changed the color  – this time I grabbed APC Waistcoat (pea green),  APC Leather Boots (medium brown), APC Lincoln’s Hat (soft black), and some APC Plymouth Rock to soften –

DSC_3387

I applied those colors over the raised stencil, blending as I went.

DSC_3388

and then –  it’s done?

DSC_3443 [1280x768]

I WISH it went that quickly, right?

DSC_3445 [1280x768]

I  didn’t capture it all with photos, so here’s a run down of what I did –

-second layer of color  went on whole base, and let dry.

-lightly sanded until I liked it.

-painted the inside Reclaim Licorice, and let dry. (black all in one primer/finish/sealer)

-brushed a layer of Caromal Colours Textured Basecoat Peppercorn (black) to the top of the sideboard, let dry.

-brushed Reclaim Licorice (black) over the Peppercorn  (black) on top, and  l;et dry.

-dry brushed the front door panels with Metallic Silver Blend,.

– Silver Blend the insides of the cabinet

-Lightly sanded the raised stencil to pop the texture.

-rubbed on several Acrylic Hi-Lite Waxes – IRI Green, IRI Gold, Pewter over the stencil panel.

-waxed the base with a mix of APC Dark Wax and APC Pewter.

– Poly’d the top using Min-wax Wipe On Poly oil based satin.

An Oak Thomasville Dining Set, Gets A Painted And Copper Top Finish

( post includes  a short video demo of the paint finish – read on 🙂 )

This was our  dining room set that we bought when we moved into our second house in the late 90’s,  the hutch

easy diy furniture paint , american paint company, chalk clay mineral paint, shop.fabfinisher.com, fabulous finishes

an oval table, 2 leaves, and 6 chairs.

When we temporarily moved before our present house was built, we needed a table and chairs.    I knew I’d never use this dining room in a dining room again – for one, I’m not a dining room person, and two  I hated the oak finish.  So I decided to paint the table and chairs with Caromal’s textured basecoat peppercorn – make it Pottery Barnish…   but I only got as far as the chairs, so this is how we used it

lllll

When we moved to our new home this summer this set when to the store.   The table and chairs sat in back, and the hutch sat out front……

DSC_6423

I wanted the whole set to flow,  so I based out the table with one coat of Caromal Textured Basecoat Peppercorn, including the top.   Then I got out my trowel and bladed on a coat of textured base black, an acrylic plaster.   Any acrylic plaster would work  (acrylic plasters are usually the ‘venetian plasters’ that aren’t lime based).

easy diy furniture paint , american paint company, chalk clay mineral paint, shop.fabfinisher.com, fabulous finishes

When the top was dry I damp sponged on, and bladed on, several colors of acrylic metallic waxes – a copper, a gold and an iridescent green.  Then I troweled over it with a black tinted satin wax .   It’s a real artsy medium to play around with,  we dabbled into this a little in one of our level 2 workshops late last year, and I think everyone would agree, you’d want to get some sampling under your belt before attempting it on a larger space.  I have yet to be able to ‘exact duplicate’ a former finish,  they all turn out different…

This was one of the 2 leaves .  The sides already second layered –  a coat of American Paint Company’s Limoge (thinned with water)  over the black peppercorn

American Paint Company, color Limoge, Chalk and Clay Paint

Then the table got its second coat, using APC Limoge

easy diy furniture paint , american paint company, chalk clay mineral paint, shop.fabfinisher.com, fabulous finishes

This was a work in progress,  meaning I wasn’t 100% WHAT I wanted to end up with, so I only did part of the table, enough to do a ‘test’.   I lightly sanded the Limoge to pop the black

easy diy furniture paint , american paint company, chalk clay mineral paint, shop.fabfinisher.com, fabulous finishes

Love  –

then I brushed it with a coat of American Paint Company’s Topcoat Finish.  This seals up the paint nicely

caromal colours textured basecoat, american paint company chalk clay paint, easy furniture finish

Then I got out American Paint Company’s new glazes – both the pretinted black and brown – and mixed my blackish brown shade – by using 2/3 black 1/3 brown and 50% water

easy diy furniture paint , american paint company, chalk clay mineral paint, shop.fabfinisher.com, fabulous finishes

and brushed it over the dried Topcoat Finish, like an easy wash

I could have left it just like this,  LOVED the color…   but, I wanted it warmer. After all, the top was coppery…

So I took some left over American Paint Company Light Wax (discontinued) and mixed it 1/2 and 1/2 with their Dark Wax  (you can also use Dark Wax mixed with 50% Clear Wax)

The top is cool – it brought back memories of all the walls I used to trowel.  the key to a nice, organic flow, on larger spaces  is move fast, work small areas, into each other, layer ALOT, and have enough experience under your belt to know how to make the uh-oh’s look just like the rest…

Table done,  time to move it out to the showroom

Now the chairs…   I knew I wasn’t going to like the chair fabric – the seat pads are in great shape, but the fabric itself always showed water marks….   too stodgy

easy diy furniture paint , american paint company, chalk clay mineral paint, shop.fabfinisher.com, fabulous finishes

Old seat cushion

I painted the seat cushions American Paint Lincoln’s Hat,  then sealed the paint using APC Topcoat Finish,  then applied one more layer of APC Topcoat, only this one had APC Copper Mica mixed in it –  it gave the fabric a little bit of shimmer

easy diy furniture paint , american paint company, chalk clay mineral paint, shop.fabfinisher.com, fabulous finishes

I added a metallic coppery backed oval, and a Limoge number (1-6) to each seat before I sealed them.   I know,  some are wiggling in their seats “Why would you ruin those seats by painting?”

This is how I looked at it –  I myself, would not buy the set and LOVE the existing fabric –  we’ve painted numerous fabric pieces in the store and every single one has  sold.  Yes, it feels weird to touch, but it feels normal to sit and it actually holds up nicely.   And how often are dining room chairs used, anyhow?  If someone doesn’t like the cushions, then they can recover – just like they would have recovered the original fabric, because it was stodgy and water marked looking.  🙂    (like my logic?)

easy diy furniture paint , american paint company, chalk clay mineral paint, shop.fabfinisher.com, fabulous finishes

The chairs, originally painted Peppercorn, got a coat of APC Limoge,

easy diy furniture paint , american paint company, chalk clay mineral paint, shop.fabfinisher.com, fabulous finishes

Before the chairs were even glazed and waxed I knew I wasn’t going to like light…  I didn’t want the WHOLE set to be the same color…

easy diy furniture paint , american paint company, chalk clay mineral paint, shop.fabfinisher.com, fabulous finishes

I figured we could use Lincoln’s Hat  so that the chairs would be a softer black .   Nobody liked me that day for wanting to paint the chairs, again….

easy diy furniture paint , american paint company, chalk clay mineral paint, shop.fabfinisher.com, fabulous finishes

In the mean time,  the hutch got a coat of Caromal Peppercorn

easy diy furniture paint , american paint company, chalk clay mineral paint, shop.fabfinisher.com, fabulous finishes

and then a wash of American Paint’s Limoge.   As that dried  I stared at the hutch and wondered how I could tie it into the whole set – copper table top and all….

easy diy furniture paint , american paint company, chalk clay mineral paint, shop.fabfinisher.com, fabulous finishes

I thought about created a copper metal all over look on the back mirrors, and tried several stencils (wiping it all back off), not liking either.    Then I pulled out this one, Organica, from Wallover (which ended up getting totally destroyed on this project),  and knew it was what I wanted.

easy diy furniture paint , american paint company, chalk clay mineral paint, shop.fabfinisher.com, fabulous finishes

I thought twice about doing this, it would mean 2 layers, everywhere, climbing over those trim pieces (ugh), but I knew it would be beautiful in the end…    In a nutshell,  I used a stencil brush and stippled on Caromal Colours Reclaim black (licorice) – almost a dry brush so it would keep the bleed down.  There was no way I was using stencil adhesive on this project – it’s worse than bleed to clean off glass and mirror…   I taped and held the design, and stippled the Reclaim.

easy diy furniture paint , american paint company, chalk clay mineral paint, shop.fabfinisher.com, fabulous finishes

The Reclaim is a perfect base for this – it not only bonds to anything but also is self sealing, so once it cures it stays put.  There was NO way I was stenciling this whole thing black,  THEN going back and re-doing all the metallic over it,  so I kept the stencil in place, took a blow dryer and lightly hit the area (10 or so seconds) to flash dry the paint – I used another stencil brush and stippled a little copper, a little copper blend and some iridescent green wax all over the design.   The acrylic waxes dry so quickly it  was easy to pound one over the other.

Most of it was tolerable, except when the design jumped the raised wood strips – then it didn’t lay flat, and trying to get a clean edge was impossible.   That meant ALOT of razor blade clean up…  but it was worth it.

Once the inside was stenciled and the outside was painted Limoge, I light sanded it to again reveal the black Peppercorn base –

Then sealed it with APC Topcoat Finish –

Really  ,  can’t find an easier all natural, water based,, non yellowing,  HARD drying topcoat/sealer than this stuff.  At full strength it’s like water, making the application effortless…

You can see where I’ve swiped on the Topcoat – it soaks right in to those absorbent paints –

When that dries, on goes the glaze wash…

When that dried,  on went  wax-  when  you’re applying wax over an already sealed finish, it doesn’t take nearly as much wax – it almost just glides on , all over, more on the surface , and then the excess is wiped off.   You don’t HAVE to wax over Topcoat – I just did to get the warmer tone…

I love jazzing up knobs, but was limited on this piece because the door span was so narrow

So I used what I had – hit them with Reclaim Licorice, then some of the wax and adhered a crystal to the front

I had more room with the drawer pulls,  and tried to swap out a number of dressier knobs,  but didn’t like any of them.  I ended up using  these backings with the  same knob  – it did just enough for me

I’m not a huge fan of refinishing whole sets – they take so long…. so I’m really thankful this project is almost complete!

Last minute , I decided to put  a quick, frill less video together, showing how easy this paint finish is
