Back From the Land of StickYourHeadInAHole

Gads, I don’t even want to look at the date of my last post – I get it, I’m way overdue.  What can I say?

Life gets in the way sometimes.

So without further ado,  lets share some projects!

I didn’t manage a picture at the very start, but this desk had a typical wood stained, varnished finish on top.  I used the Citristrip stuff to clean off the first layer.   Then I grabbed Caromal’s Textured Basecoats, in the Putty color –

painted_desk_black_apc_chalk_texture_wax_fabfinisher-6and brushed a thin coat on the base-

painted_desk_black_apc_chalk_texture_wax_fabfinisher-7

While the base was drying, I got out the American Paint Company all natural Antiquing Wax, in a pretinted ‘dark’ color, and scrubbed that on the rawer wood –

painted_desk_black_apc_chalk_texture_wax_fabfinisher-10

This is my favorite wax, by far,  over painted finishes, but I hadn’t really used it in this manner –  O M G…….

painted_desk_black_apc_chalk_texture_wax_fabfinisher-11

How beautiful is that wood turning?   Just scrub it on,  and I mean SCRUB –  don’t daintily paint it on, because you’ll waste a bunch, good for me cuz you’ll come back to buy more, but that’s silly, and wasteful – scrub it on – I prefer a natural bristle brush to get it deep and gritty,  and get your whole surface covered.  Let it seep in for a couple minutes, then wipe off with a soft cloth.

painted_desk_black_apc_chalk_texture_wax_fabfinisher-12

You NEED to wipe that excess off, or your surface will forever feel sticky.  Once the excess is off, let your surface dry out for a few hours, then buff it with another soft cloth.     So easy, and feels amazing.

painted_desk_black_apc_chalk_texture_wax_fabfinisher-13

When the Putty was dry, I took the middle drawer, and a stencil, and the Putty, and stenciled a thicker relief stencil.  No photo, but you can see the stencil in the picture below where I brushed APC Cannonball over the Putty and stencil, let it dry, then sanded to reveal the Putty texture and relief –

painted_desk_black_apc_chalk_texture_wax_fabfinisher-19painted_desk_black_apc_chalk_texture_wax_fabfinisher-20 painted_desk_black_apc_chalk_texture_wax_fabfinisher-22

I finished covering the base with American Paint Cannonball (you can thin it a little to get it to glide even better)

painted_desk_black_apc_chalk_texture_wax_fabfinisher-23 painted_desk_black_apc_chalk_texture_wax_fabfinisher-24

The APC Chalk/Clay paints dry pretty fast,  once the black was dry I used a 180 sandpaper and gave the whole surface a light sanding .  Twofold,  the sanding breaks through the top color, revealing the dimensional texture below, and it also gives the painted surface a nice soft feel.

I used that same American Paint Vintage Dark Wax, to seal of the paint finish, and buffed it to a pretty sheen when it was dry.

painted_desk_black_apc_chalk_texture_wax_fabfinisher-5painted_desk_black_apc_chalk_texture_wax_fabfinisher-2painted_desk_black_apc_chalk_texture_wax_fabfinisher-3

I cleaned and refinished the hardware using the same paints, a sealer, and a few Swarovski crystals, and added some stenciling inside the drawers –

We Love When Our Customers Share Their Projects!

It’s always fun to see what our customers are doing, how they tackle projects with our products…

Here are some recent pictures-
This kitchen was shared last time around, but the counters and a few other pretties weren’t complete. The proud owner shared a more recent photo of her updated kitchen – the before

and the after,  cabinets painted and glazed by the homeowners themselves

A pair of fun chairs using several of our chalk and clay paints by American Paint Company.  Using our Fish Fossil Stencil with our Stone Plaster adds a great raised design-

Dawn visited her father in Florida, and his several pieces of oak furniture that no longer worked for him.  He wanted a lighter, weathered wood feel, and chose a barnworn finish on the table, and a softer color on the rest.

They used Textured Basecoat colors Putty and Wisteria with our Molasses Glaze.  The remaining pieces were painted White and our Less Intense Molasses Glaze.

Dear Patty

Here are some pictures of my Master Bathroom using your Reclaim Off White and your Molasses Less Intense Glaze.    I’m so thankful to have stumbled upon your website and love all of your inspiration and products!  I only wish I lived nearby to check out your store in person.   Adrienne   Monument, Colorado

One of our regular customers online, Katherine from Arkansas, shared this headboard project she completed:

Here’s a before and after – The first is the stripped raw wood with a watered down Reclaim Pebble. You can see half of the head board is done.

The second photo is after the Caromal Colours Toner was brushed on in in direction of the wood grain but not wiped back.  I just brushed until it no longer had streaks.   Toner worked beautifully! Over the weekend I tried different glazes and said to myself ” it just doesn’t have enough bite”  Then I remembered you saying how toner has a great bite to it! Thanks so much! It’s exactly the look I was going for.

LOVE IT!!

Shannon painted this cabinet using a custom teal Cottage Paint color we tinted for her.   This is a great way to accommodate our customers when they have a specific color in mind they they can’t find with our current line of paints.   She used some of our American Paint colors that she had left over from other projects to paint and stencil the inside –

Lynn’s hutch makeover turned out amazing  –

lynn_hutch_painted_makeover_fabfinisher_cottage_paint_ash

This hope chest started its transformation in one of our Paint a Piece Workshops.  Our customer brought in the chest, minus the top (otherwise the piece would have been too large to complete) and painted cream with  American Paint Dark Vintage Wax to add that lovely antiquing effect, and a soft sheen and feel as well.

chest 2

It’s a beautiful chest – she loved it for years in its darker form, but it was time for a lighter version.  I love that she can still appreciate this piece that holds meaning to her.

Customer Paint Projects To Share – Round 1

Happy 2016!   I swear the older I’m getting the faster time seems to be flying…

I thought I’d start out this new year cleaning the slate of ‘Customers Projects that Need Sharing’.   It’s the best way to inspire others that might be a little hesitant trying our products.   And a shout out to all our amazing customers that are willing to share their projects – I really appreciate it!!

This customer used our Mocha Reclaim to paint right over her original PAINTED WHITE spindles.  Over one hundred of the,  no less! stairrailsafter1

Instead of investing some serious $$ to replace the white spindles for wrought iron, she thought she’d try painting them instead…

stairrailsafter2

The darker spindles changed the whole feel in her foyer, and she was thrilled.

Tamanna’s first project was this buffet – she acquired it for the great bones, not the color.  Her goal was black with a glossy topcoat.

black before

she used Reclaim Licorice, and a glossy wipe on poly,  and LOVED its ease of use.

black

She was back in this past weekend, to search for the perfect grey color for her kitchen cabinets.  She asked about painting the granite around two fireplaces, and went home and used one coat of her leftover Reclaim Licorice on both!

How’s this for a simple update?

Another client, came in this past weekend – back to find a color to paint her kitchen island cabinets.   She said,  “Let me show you  – I painted my kitchen with with your paints and love how it turned out…”   and she pulled up photos on her phone:

She used White Reclaim and our Coffee Glaze, and finished the update with new hardware

What a difference!!  CHANGE

kitaf5

She’s going darker on the island to give it a whole different feel –

Leah transformed her armoire using our paints –

leah_armoire_before

which paint, I’m not QUITE sure – maybe American Paint?  Caromal?

leah_armoire_after

It doesn’t matter- what matters is it looks pretty darn nice on that dark wood floor – she used one of our Stencils and repeated it down the sides, even added a little Swarovski Crystal Bling!

leah_armoire_after_closeup_stencil

Diane gave this kitchen a great new feel, taking the original cabinets to a Sage Greenreclaim_sage_cabinets

I wish we had the befores for this kitchen,  stained cabinets with a stained floor was probably ALOT of stained wood which,  isn’t a bad thing, but look how lovely this sage is against the floor now?

reclaim_sage_kitchen_transformation

Hardware was a new addition, as well as the decorative ‘feet’ tucked in next to the toekick…

sage_cabinets_reclaim_paint_fabulous_finishes

You can find many varieties online, just search on ‘wood cabinet feet’

cabinet_wood_feet

LOL,  these are REALLY some feet to add 🙂

Jackie shared two of her projects, both crafted using our Aged Papers and Botanical Paints ….  this one looks like Botanical Iris, and the paper is the blue damask

jackie 2

and this lovely looks to be Textured Basecoat Peppercorn with Botanical Dandelion over it, sanded back for reveal.  The Aged Paper is one of the botanical Sunflower prints.   Our paper order arrives this week, and due in are new Valentine and Easter prints – can’t wait to add those to the store –

jackie

Sue shared some of her canvas art, created using Textured Basecoat Peppercorn, The Aged Papers, American Paint Co. chalk and clay paints and American Paint Co. Dark Wax

sue 1

How cool are these?  Love her creativity and play on texture …

sue 2

including the use of Stencils to created raised relief.  We offer a great selection of stencils, and make a point to note which ones are better suited for building relief…

sue 3

Some of our large stencils may seem a little pricey,  but they are worth the investment if you plan on finishing more than one project.  Most of our large ones are thick and extra sturdy, allowing them to be used and cleaned over and over again.  The larger size also means a more extensive pattern, which can be used in many ways – stack them for an allover effect, use the whole design or just a few parts of it –

sue 4

I am going to break this into several posts, that way it won’t run on forever, and I can get this part live.   I’ve committed to getting all the shares posted, so Round 2 will be up this week as well.

American Paint Freedom Road Grey Gray – Waxed Black and Brown

Freedom Road is one of our top sellers –

American Paint Company‘s medium grey gray

apc_chalk_clay_paint_freedom_road_grey_gray

A lovely color on it’s own, very Restoration Hardware

Applying APC’s Vintage Clear Wax, tinted with  black pigment (aka make-your-own-black-wax) will intensify the color as you can see on this small nightstand I finished

nightstand_before_apc_freedom_road_waistcoat_black_wax_botanical_paper

I layered Freedom Road over APC Waistcoat, and then sanded back to refine the finish.  Because the original piece was haphazardly painted white, it took little to no effort to reveal peeks of white through the colored paint.  So far, the drawer and side trim have been black waxed.

apc_freedom_road_waistcoat_black_wax_botanical_paper2

Over the top I only applied a coat of Freedom Road. When it dried I applied a quick watered down brush coat of Satin Sealer, just to seal up the paint. Once dry, I brushed another liberal coat of Sealer mixed with water, positioned my Aged Botanical Paper over it, then proceeded to adhere it to the furniture top.  apc_freedom_road_waistcoat_black_wax_botanical_paper4

You can see the piece, tucked in the corner below –

fabulous_finishes_studio_retail_apc_chalk_clay_paint

Applying American Paint’s Vintage Dark Wax, a pre-tinted brown, will change the whole look and feel of Freedom Road.

This vintage radio cabinet started with a layer of APC Home Plate –

radio_cabinet_chalk_home_plate

Once dry I applied the APC Freedom Road, and sanded back (once dry) to reveal some of the Home Plate and original finish. To seal it up I used APC’s all natural, very easy to use, Vintage Dark Wax  – scrubbed it on with a brush and softly wiped the excess back

radio_cabinet_apc_chalk_clay_paint_freedom_road_dark_wax3

Would you have expected this color?

radio_cabinet_apc_chalk_clay_paint_freedom_road_dark_wax2

The dark wax will take the grey to an kakhi/olive/green tone.  No grey no more!

radio_cabinet_apc_chalk_clay_paint_freedom_road_dark_wax5

The top I took in a little different direction. First, I brushed a coat of Caromal Colours Textured Basecoat Chocolate

when that dried I brushed a thin coat of APC Home Plate, sanded it to reveal the Chocolate texture, topcoated it with APC Topcoat Finish,  a more durable topcoat alternative to wax, and then gave it a wash with a black and brown glaze –

radio_cabinet_apc_chalk_clay_paint_freedom_road_dark_wax

I painted the inside Home Plate as well, and tucked a stencil on the back for fun

radio_cabinet_apc_chalk_clay_paint_freedom_road_dark_wax_stenciled_inside_cabinet

radio_cabinet_apc_chalk_clay_paint_freedom_road_dark_wax_stenciled_swarovski_crystals

The back got a fun wash of APC Waistcoat and a little Freedom Road.... no topcoating on the back –

radio_cabinet_apc_chalk_clay_paint_freedom_road_dark_wax_painted_back

But quite a different spin on grey.    I prefer using my powdered pigments and/or mica’s either mixed into a Clear Wax or into a Clear Glaze.  I’m not a fan of tinting my topcoat…

radio cabinet freedom road

We’ve got a great selection of  almost a dozen Powder Pigments, and a dozen more Mica Powders to choose from.  If you like to paint and create, these are a must have.  A little goes a long way, and once mixed still hold a decent shelf life.
