We Love When Our Customers Share Their Projects!

It’s always fun to see what our customers are doing, how they tackle projects with our products…

Here are some recent pictures-
This kitchen was shared last time around, but the counters and a few other pretties weren’t complete. The proud owner shared a more recent photo of her updated kitchen – the before

and the after,  cabinets painted and glazed by the homeowners themselves

Updated, painted oak cabinets, using Reclaim White with Coffee Glaze.

A pair of fun chairs using several of our chalk and clay paints by American Paint Company.  Using our Fish Fossil Stencil with our Stone Plaster adds a great raised design-

Dawn visited her father in Florida, and his several pieces of oak furniture that no longer worked for him.  He wanted a lighter, weathered wood feel, and chose a barnworn finish on the table, and a softer color on the rest.

They used Textured Basecoat colors Putty and Wisteria with our Molasses Glaze.  The remaining pieces were painted with our Cottage Paint Wonder White, and our Less Intense Molasses Glaze.

One of our regular customers online, Katherine from Arkansas, shared this headboard project she completed:

Here’s a before and after – The first is the stripped raw wood with a watered down Reclaim Pebble. You can see half of the head board is done.

The second photo is after the Caromal Colours Toner was brushed on in in direction of the wood grain but not wiped back.  I just brushed until it no longer had streaks.   Toner worked beautifully! Over the weekend I tried different glazes and said to myself ” it just doesn’t have enough bite”  Then I remembered you saying how toner has a great bite to it! Thanks so much! It’s exactly the look I was going for.

LOVE IT!!

Shannon painted this cabinet using a custom teal Cottage Paint color we tinted for her.   This is a great way to accommodate our customers when they have a specific color in mind they they can’t find with our current line of paints.   She used some of our American Paint colors that she had left over from other projects to paint and stencil the inside –

This hope chest started its transformation in one of our Paint a Piece Workshops.  Our customer brought in the chest, minus the top (otherwise the piece would have been too large to complete) and painted it with our Cottage Paint custom color Vanilla.  Over that she used our American Paint Dark Vintage Wax to add that lovely antiquing effect, and a soft sheen and feel as well.

It’s a beautiful chest – she loved it for years in its darker form, but it was time for a lighter version.  I love that she can still appreciate this piece that holds meaning to her.

At The Fab, Paint Can Top Anything…

Love this time of year – the berry sprigs, pine needles, and snow tipped branches packed away, and blooming flowers take their place.  I arranged these pretty stems in a burlap container that I stenciled using our Postage Stamp Stencil and Caromal Colours Stencil Creme Mother Earth

Fabulous_finishes_painted_burlap_pots

This black metal vase turned patina easily, dragging Botanical Paint Aster, Moss and a little Gardenia.  No topcoat is required, as the Botanical Paints will stay put once dry,  but the finish will be chalky flat –  Fabulous_finishes_painted_chalk_clay_urn

A barn door was already crackled, easily achieved using Cottage Paint’s Easy Crackle and Cottage Wonderous White,  or Elmers Glue and American Paint Company Navajo White.  I added a stamp stencil using Caromal Colours Stencil Creme Mother Earth

Fabulous_finishes_painted_door_stamp

This frame, originally teal and zebra,  changed it’s look using Reclaim Nantucket Blue.  I applied a dimensional FISH BONES stencil using Texture Plaster, and stenciled a metallic crown, decorating it with Swarovski Crystals. Did I mention we’ll be adding those to our online store this week?  I found a fun lady-catches-big-fish picture to display, knowing it would appeal to one of our many cottage/boater customers.    It wasn’t around long…

Fabulous_finishes_painted_fish_frame

This basket is original – a weave of grapevine and moss…  it holds plaster ornaments that I gilded, using several variegated patterns of leaf.   If gilding interests you, take a peak at our online video from Shelby TV Episode 1

Fabulous_finishes_painted_gilded_ornaments

I acquired this pair of ‘fruit art’ from an estate sale.  They were horribly gaudy – painted goldish plastic resin.  I painted them with Caromal Textured Basecoat Candy Apple Red, to give them some ‘uummph’ ,  and then topped that with Reclaim Black Licorice.   I painted the fruit and leaves with Modern Masters Metal Effects Bronze and Copper, (arriving online soon), and then oxidized the metal paint using their Green and Blue Patina Aging Solution (arriving online soon).  Lastly, I applied Caromal’s Antiquing Toner

Fabulous_finishes_painted_plaster_fruit

Not something you see often…

Fabulous_finishes_painted_plaster_fruit_grapes

We had several decorative wooden balls in house, in a state of boring brown… I dry brushed them with Botanical Aster, and dry brushed the vintage chair spring with APC Navajo White.  These springs are so fun,  I can’t believe they were an integral chair part of past…

Fabulous_finishes_painted_balls

Smaller shelf units, wooden stools, ladders, make great items to decorate with paint, and then display fun wares…  this one was painted with Caromal Textured Basecoat Pumpkin, Botanical Aster, and then stenciled with Caromal Stencil Creme Mother Earth.

It already has found a new home 🙂

With the nicer weather comes that crazy  hot, afternoon sun, beating in the front windows…  the UV film doesn’t cut the mustard.   We brainstormed about mounting drape panels on the big windows that flank the door – we could swag them to one side until its SUN BLAST time, then let them down. Gonna try that.

But what about the small window over the door?     I used one of our repeat medallion stencils (see the four parts?), and a plastic gift card to apply, via scraping/blading, Caromal Textured Basecoat Peppercorn

Fabulous_finishes_paint_stencil_medallion_dimension_glass

and from the outside…

Fabulous_finishes_paint_stenciled_glass_window_medallion

Which takes me to these pretty young things… This year’s door greeters –

Fabulous_finishes_paint_store_entry_detroit

I had these 2 urn planters from several Christmases ago.  Originally, they were single, prelit, pine ball topiary’s, in a resin urn.   That first year was a huge disappointment – the cords submerged in water, then froze over,  so you couldn’t even get to the wires to fix them.    I brought them to the store after Christmas, plucked the bad stuff out, and used them as decorative store displays…

pine_urn_planter_fall_decor

They took up a lot of room though, and I wanted outdoor planters, so I decided to go BIG on these planters…

I found fake ‘tall boxwood topiary’s ‘ at Big Lot, and inserted them into the original pine balls,  making sure they were secure.   Then I went to work adding various flowers and foliage to each base.

Fabulous_finishes_paint_textured_outside_pots_caromal

The paint finish on the urns looked worn – I refreshed it using Caromal Textured Basecoat Paprika, dry brushed Cottage Paint Bold Black, sprayed on gold Webbing veins, then gave it a coating of Caromal Toner.  Once good and dry I applied a coat of Reclaim Indoor/Outdoor Sealer, since they will be outside.

Fabulous_finishes_paintedpots

The tops needed some whimsy,  I added wood twigs, and green sprigs, and bird nests, and bows… even a few little crystal thinga-majigs on wire…

Fabulous_finishes_studio_topary

Aren’t they fun?

Fabulous_finishes_painted_store_topary

The before frame

Fabulous_finishes_frame_art_before_painting_chalk

I used a similar process that I did, up above, on those resin fruit frames – oxidizing metal paint with a blue and green patina.  It blended so perfect with the photo…

Fabulous_finishes_painted_verdegris_framed_art

Naturally old world worn looking…

Fabulous_finishes_painted_verdegris_art_frame

Another frame I painted, this original was black – I dry brushed it with Caromal Textured Basecoat Putty, Botanical Willow,  and Gardenia and decorated the inside with an Aged Paper Receipt

Fabulous_finishes_painted_restoration_hardware_frame

Different paints, different textures, different results… use them on their own, or mix them together like I did here –

Fabulous_finishes_painted_restoration_hardware

This metal stand was raw bright tin colored.  I painted it Cottage Paint Gorgeous Grey (one of our custom colors), then stenciled it with Caromal Stencil Creme Winterberry

Stenciling a stuffed mannequin,  painting tin tags…   both seem to come alive with paint –

Time Flies, Even When You’re Not Having Fun!

April arrived, set to be a busy month.  Easter morning we were on a plane, flying out of Detroit, on our way to a big ship in the ocean, chaperoning our daughter and five friends during spring break.   A year ago we were on our way to Mexico for my son’s spring break…

Milestones like this make me think back, way back….   when did my kids grow up?

Time To Get Your Paint On, New DIY Colors For 2015

I hope your holidays were filled with much love and sparkle.  I took a much needed break from posting this year.   Spending time at home with family is a rarity for me,  unfortunately when you own your own business you can’t just turn it all off for a week or two,  but you can turn off most…

burgermeister, fabulous finishes studio, no blogging allowed, balancing family

NO more blogging when your family is home!

   Happy 2015!!

BACK TO BUSINESS

We’ve been hard at work, trying to get our displays updated and more uniform, readying ourselves for the new year…

Two years ago I had more space than I knew what to do with – now I can stare at every wall and realize it has been revamped, and redesigned several times to fit the growth and create good flow….

caromal colours, american paint, reclaim, botanical, fabulous finishes studio, diy paints, painted furniture, cabinets, shop online, shop.fabfinisher.com, coupon pattyh, metro detroit, no sanding, no stripping, no priming, workshops

A customer arrives –   not sure about the whole  ‘painting without sanding, priming, stripping’  concept…   a project in mind, but no clue where to start.

This wall offers opportunity –  any of these paints can be applied directly over existing furniture, cabinets, accessories, without sanding/stripping/priming.

We like options, and we strive to offer  a rainbow of options – not just colors, but end result finishes –  smooth, textured, vintage, shabby, clean, sleek, shine, no shine, waxed, sealed,  one color, layered color,   easy roll on, more intense ‘fiddling and finessing until you like what you have’.      Our goal is to find products that are truly easy enough to use,  and that offer nice quality finishes that won’t curl off in two months.

The left section is Caromal Colours,  the middle,  American Paint Company, and  the far right section will be stocked next month with another easy to use collection, offering it’s own finish style –

caromal colours, american paint, reclaim, botanical, fabulous finishes studio, diy paints, painted furniture, cabinets, shop online, shop.fabfinisher.com, coupon pattyh, metro detroit, no sanding, no stripping, no priming, workshops

Caromal Colours  –  all water based and non-toxic products, with several distinct lines –

RECLAIM –   all-in-one bonder/primer/finisher that cures to a durable, washable surface in several coats.   It provides a protective coat within its formula, though for heavier used surfaces we recommend RECLAIM Sealer.    Preferred method of application – low nap roller.

We changed things up with our American Paint Company display as well.   As you can see below,   the color frames were different sizes,  propped on old pallet frames.  It worked for awhile, and looked cool, but it wasn’t easy to follow, and wasted wall space –

We hit the dollar store, purchased more frames, and repainted every color in the APC deck –  we even included colors that are retiring , because the colors are still available – and on sale too! – so great deal, but if you can’t ‘see’ the color then how can you know it’s right for you?

Our American Paint Company paints, offers the most color selection.  A chalk and clay base paint, American Paint is thick, rich, and provides superior coverage. No-odor, non-toxic and no VOC’s.

It is the paint I like to get super artsy with – you can blend and wash and layer, over and over, and sand and wet wipe until its just right.  If a wax finish is for you, it can be waxed and buffed to the highest sheen .  Preferred method of application – brush.

Removing the old pallets, and hanging single rails allowed us to showcase the colors nicely together.  We also took down the old 2×2 boards that had velcro’d paint sample finishes hanging on them, and more efficiently offer those in pull-out baskets –

With all the colors together like this, I see so many cool color combinations

even with colors I wouldn’t have thought to use before –

Instead of posting all the close ups of these new colors here,  I’ll create an accompanying post to this one titled APC Home Collection, so that it’s  easily searchable.

This last section will offer more DIY ease  ie) paints that can be applied over cabinets and furniture without priming/sanding/stripping ,   a brush on with excellent coverage and leveling, more sheen, not as matte chalky, and darker, more regal colors

Of course home field has an advantage – customers can come in and see colors and samples first hand.  However,  we’re working really hard to update our commerce site as well, so products will be easier to find, with better descriptions and direct links to blog posts where you can find even more information.

I did get an update a few days ago and the goal is to have the site live for test runs by next week.
