Aged Paper, Plaster and Canvas Workshop

This week we hosted an Aged Paper, Plaster and Canvas Workshop dealing with mounting papers on canvas, building and blending a border to mask the image edge using paint, plaster and wax.

The Aged Papers are addicting, we stock  a huge assortment, which makes choosing difficult…

The papers are 11×17,  and can be used in a variety of ways.   You could

  • slip them in a frame as is
  • line a drawer
  • create a focal wall
  • decorate larger furniture surfaces, like inside a china cabinet fabulous-finishes-studio-inspiration-painted-furniture-workshops-metro-detroit-diy-paints-shop-online0243
  • dressing up backs of furniture that will show in a roomfabulous_finishes_online_store_aged_papers (5)
  • adding a design element to furniture panelsfabulous_finishes_studio_chalk_clay_chest_paris_wood

Our current Aged Paper Workshop creates art on canvas.

We begin by painting the canvas with a base color we choose, then we dry.  The paper’s edges are scored, and then the mounting process begins, using our Durable Matte Sealer with a squirt of glue mixed in.

fabulous_finishes_aged_paper_canvas_workshop_032916 (5)

We work to smooth out wrinkles and bubbles, then once our art-in-process is dry we begin layering a combination of plaster and paint – a little here, a little there, some scraping, blending, fiddling, some more plaster or more paint, blend and fiddle some more…

fabulous_finishes_aged_paper_canvas_workshop_032916 (6)

This is the longest stretch of the workshop – it relies on each person’s own eye, deciding ‘where’ they want or need more color or dimension, it’s not an exact science,  it’s just a feelie kindof thing,  and it’s cool to watch 🙂

fabulous_finishes_aged_paper_canvas_workshop_032916 (7)

Once the fiddling is complete,  our canvas art is dried, and then a wax color (or colors) is selected, to finish off our piece.   I love American Paint Company’s Vintage Waxes – I rave about them a lot, and for good reason – they are simply the best!

I use  APC’s Vintage Clear Wax to create colored waxes by adding pigment tints – like one canvas used a blue wax in the final pass – I’ll add our mica powders to create various shimmer wax colors as well.   I create each color or shimmer into it’s own snap-deli container, so it’s an easy go-to-grab when I need it.

We used a variety of wax colors to finish off the canvas’s –  APC’s Dark Wax, which gives an umber vintage effect, and APC Wax custom tinted to Brass, Aged Gold, Pearl, Pewter, Shimmered Silver, Blue, and Black.

fabulous_finishes_aged_paper_canvas_workshop_032916 (13)

Pretty fun night – thank you ladies!!

The plaster we use, to blend and layer the edges is Caromal’s Perfect Plaster

perfect_plaster-buy_fabulous_finishes

It’s unlike any of our other plasters – it’s whippy, think paint folded with whipped crème, then sprinkle in some seeds or specks of little things that bust open when you scrape them.   I wont’ apply the paper’s without it.

It’s also cool as a wall finish, which is it’s original intent (LOL)

I forgot to add a link to my videos page,  here  , if you check out video #5 it’s a short Shelby TV segment on this paper type application on a small stool.

10 Projects, 10 Days – A Nightstand, Pink and Turquoise Chalk and Clay…

The first of ten projects I’ll be sharing these next 10 days –

You see pink combo’d with turquoise everywhere

boards.weddingbee.com

blog.girlybubble.com

projectnursery.com

So I decided to put the two together for this little nightstand

Momma’s Lipstick, a classic vintage pink,  by American Paint Company

The top –

DSC_2456

I decide midstream that I  DONT want the top ‘just pink’…  (that happens to me alot 🙂 )   so I wiped it off with a damp cloth –

DSC_2457

That easy!

DSC_2458

I pulled out a Stone plaster medium and bladed a thick relief stencil on the top

DSC_2459

When the stencil dried, I painted over it completely with Mamma’s Lipstick.

I used Surfboard,  American Paint’s chalk and clay version of a light, soft, turquoise, and painted the front and inner sections

DSC_2461

DSC_2462

I  layered the colors  on the drawer,  Surfboard OVER Mamma’s Lipstick

DSC_2463

I give the solid colors a quick wash second coat  – most often the first coat looks pretty darn good, but I don’t let it deceive me – I always give my finishes a second coat.  The second coat uses not much paint at all – its a little paint brushed on, and then a little water introduced (see me dipping my brush into the water bowl?) to help move that paint arouund.  This thin, second, washy coat really helps to even out my first layer –

DSC_2464

DSC_2466

Let it dry, sand to refine your bumps, ridges, less-than-perfect-spots… and to reveal your under color (like below)  if desired –

DSC_2467

Sand the top

DSC_2487

out pops that pretty design

DSC_2488

On to topcoating –

For this project I used APC’s Dark Vintage Wax- brush it on

DSC_2468

wipe away excess……. and let dry.

DSC_2474

DSC_2470

Four to six hours later, you can buff your wax finish for  a nice sheen

DSC_2471

The top gets wax too… remember to softly remove any excess, or your piece will remain ever tacky.    You can buff, once dry, with a soft cloth by hand, or quick and easy with one of our Wax Buffer Brushes that attach to any power drill –

DSC_2492

No barrier coat necessary for this wax, but I should note, this project is in my TO SHARE folder, and it was painted last year.  Last year APC’s Vintage Dark Wax was very mild – it’s effect was quite subtle.  Though nice over the light neutrals (softly added an antiqued  effect), over anything of color it didn’t leave much punch.

    DSC_2475

APC revised their Dark Wax formula and now it really adds a nice aged effect to their whole palette of colors.   If you prefer a very mild aging wax, merely cut the dark wax with equal parts of clear, and you’ll be back to this old version.

DSC_2498

DSC_2496

DSC_2502

Mamma’s Lipstick and Surfboard, still remain one of my favorite APC chalk/clay paint combinations –

DSC_2507

Even a little surprise on the back 🙂

Layering Foil And A Custom Mix of American Paint Clay Chalk Mineral Paints…

So we’ve got these fun metallic foils available, by the foot, available in store and online

An easy enough way to add some pop and pizazz to furniture, trim, accents…

metallic foils, fabulous finishes paint studio, chalk clay mineral paint, american paint company, caromal colours, reclaim, paitned furniture, workshops, metro detroit, michigan, shop.fabfinisher.comDSC_0896

Foils can be applied over a painted surface-

– I don’t foil over an existing furniture finish – I paint or seal the piece first

– over Caromal Colours Reclaim (built in sealer)   let dry 36 hrs before foiling

–  over chalk clay mineral based paints – it will pull right off unless SEALED first.   Do not seal with wax,  as the foil won’t adhere properly,  I seal my American Paint clay mineral paint with APC water based Topcoat Finish.

BE PATIENT.   Don’t paint your piece and topcoat all in four hours and then expect  to foiling five minutes later – your base needs to be cured or the sizing will pull your finish off.

Foils work kindof like kiddy transfer tatoos – you rub them over a sealed, sized, surface – then remove the paper to reveal your finished product.  Most foil patterns do not transfer 100% off the paper – expect about 80-95% transfer.  Because of this, your basecoat color DOES matter as you will see traces of it.

We have a simple video in the works, showing the step by step application of Metallic Foils, and we’ll post that as soon as it’s available.

  1. Make sure surface is sealed.  Pay attention to your basecoat color and how it will play with your foil pattern.
  2. Apply one coat of Sticky Size/ Wunda Size and let set up to a tack (about 15-30 minutes).   You can brush or roll, but be careful of brush strokes as these can relay through to your foiled finish
  3. Lay a sheet of foil over the tacky size, solid size down (you should be looking at your pattern ) and scrub with a coarse scrubber to transfer the foiling.  metallic foils, fabulous finishes paint studio, chalk clay mineral paint, american paint company, caromal colours, reclaim, paitned furniture, workshops, metro detroit, michigan, shop.fabfinisher.com
  4. You can seal with a water or oil based topcoat – I like to use American Paint’s Vintage Dark Wax as it adds a little depth to the finish.  Use a glossier topcoat to create a high sheen, cool over the foils.

I played around on this accent table –   it was white when I got it and I used a black texturebase to create a raised allover stencil design on the top

I was yearning for something burnt orange, so I cooked up a custom color, using American Paint’s Magenta and Orange Grove

then I drybrushed American Paint Shoreline,  a fabulous bright turquoise – great for adding a nice patina

But then….    it happened.

metallic foils, fabulous finishes paint studio, chalk clay mineral paint, american paint company, caromal colours, reclaim, painted furniture, workshops, metro detroit, michigan, shop.fabfinisher.com

I couldn’t live with the orange legs longer than an hour…  I grabbed Born on the Fourth of July, a great dark blue from American Paint, that changes colors as you water it down ,  and painted the whole thing, top and bottom.

metallic foils, fabulous finishes paint studio, chalk clay mineral paint, american paint company, caromal colours, reclaim, painted furniture, workshops, metro detroit, michigan, shop.fabfinisher.com

Then I didn’t like the top being the same color as the bottom so I painted the top Cannonball, a black from APC.   Then sanded the bejesus out of it metallic foils, fabulous finishes paint studio, chalk clay mineral paint, american paint company, caromal colours, reclaim, painted furniture, workshops, metro detroit, michigan, shop.fabfinisher.com

and waxed the whole thing one more time, this time with American’s Clear Wax

So much for foiling the top!   The cool thing, though, is – you can ‘see’ spots, here and there,  in the top finish,  of the gold foil…metallic foils, fabulous finishes paint studio, chalk clay mineral paint, american paint company, caromal colours, reclaim, painted furniture, workshops, metro detroit, michigan, shop.fabfinisher.com

Of course, I couldn’t wait to DEMO the foils, right?  I wanted to try the Weathered Copper Metallic Foil

So I grabbed an old door and created this sample – using Caromal Colours Textured Basecoat Pumpkin,  Caromal Sticky Size, Weathered Copper Foil,  American Paint Company Peacock, American Paint Company Surfboard, and American Paint Company Vintage Dark Wax

Yes, that was perfect!   Now the table I had in mind-

DSC_0747

I had been saving it for awhile, with intentions of using a new clock stencil on the center –   that would still be the plan.

DSC_0748

  • When that dried, I brushed on a coat of Caromal Sticky Size to the center circle of the top  – the same water based size used for gilding (leafing) – you can brush or roll it on, and it takes about 15 minutes to set to a tack (goes on milky, dries clear).
  •   Then I took a piece of Weathered Copper Metallic Foil, crinkled it up a little, unbunched it, and layed it over my sticky surface (shiny side up).  To transfer the foil to the door I used a firm scrub brush and scrubbed over the surface –  lifted the backing off and voila, weathered copper!
  • I used American Paint Company Cannonball for the stencil
  • Around the remainder of the table I brushed on American Paint Company Peacock with some Surfboard blended in to highlight.
  • I sealed the whole table with  American Paint Company Vintage Dark Wax

Back to the body –  here you can see that thin layer of textured basecoat pumpkin –  I used that because I wanted this finish to feel like weathered, patina’d copper – the foil pattern would be brilliant on it’s own, but I wanted the finish to fit around it like a glove.

Peacock and a little Surfboard, same brush, same time, just here and there when I feel the urge to create a lighter spot –

and sanding around the top – popping that little bit of textured pumpkin
